How To: Customize Your Mac's Top Keys to Control Either Functions or Built-in Features Without Using Fn
Mac keyboards are great when listening to music or watching a movie, since you can control what's playing without going back into iTunes or QuickTime Player. However, when you're using an app like Photoshop that uses the F7, F8, and F9 as shortcuts, it gets pretty annoying to have to hold down the Fn key. Why can't you just hit the back, play/pause, and skip buttons alone?You can easily revert those media/system keys to regular function keys in Mac OS X (go to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard, and check "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"), but what if you want to switch just the media controls and not the screen and volume keys?This inconvenience is what drove developer Kevin Gessner to create FunctionFlip, which can switch all, or just a few, of your F keys from built-in feature shortcuts to normal function keys. Since this is accomplished using a background service, it can easily be enabled and disabled so you don't have to worry about losing any of your playback controls. Step 1: Install FunctionFlipFunctionFlip is not available in the Mac App Store, so you will need to download the FunctionFlip.zip, extract it, then double-click to install. Before installing, make sure that your Gatekeeper security settings will let you install apps from unidentified developers.Unlike other apps, FunctionFlip is not stored in your Applications folder, but in your System Preferences as a preference pane.

Step 2: Enable FunctionFlip in AccessibilityIn order for FunctionFlip to change your keys, you will need to give it access to your computer. You should automatically see a popup notifying you to do so the first time you open it. If not, head to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Accessibility, and check the box next to FunctionFlip.

Step 3: Flip Your KeysNow that you have the preference pane installed, go to "FunctionFlip" in System Preferences to select which media keys you want to revert. To switch your keys to regular F keys, check the box next to it. If left unchecked, it will continue to function as usual. And if you end up needing to use any of your flipped keys as media/system controls, all you have to do is hold down the function key. You can start and stop the FunctionFlip service manually from the preference pane, but if you want, you can enable it to start every time you boot up your Mac by checking "Start FunctionFlip at Login."Did this tweak work for you? AI-Enhanced Dual CamerasThe ZenFone 5Z is equipped with two rear cameras, one 16 MP and one 12 MP. Both use the Sony IMX363 image sensor. The primary camera has a typical field of view of 83Â°, while the secondary is wide-angle at 120Â°. The primary lens has optical image stabilization and electronic image stabilization. Like the rear cameras, it supports portrait mode and a feature known has NightHDR, which leverages the dynamic contrast of HDR in low-light scenes.
Using machine learning, the rear cameras can detect up to 16 different scenes and adjust the camera settings to best capture the scene. Machine learning is also used in a feature called AI Photo Learning. The phone learns how you like your photos to look and automatically adjusts the camera settings to your preferred choice.Finally, the gallery app brings over many of the AI enhancements of Google Photos. One option you won't find buried in the Galaxy Note 9's Settings is the ability to return the navigation bar to black. Samsung changed the default color to white with the Note 8, removing any ability to bring the black color back. But thanks to a neat app, Note 9 users can do it themselves.Before you jump to Step 1, do note there is a downside to this. The Galaxy Note 9 uses an OLED screen, so pixels are turned off when black is displayed, which protects against aging. As a result, while the rest of the screen's pixels age, fading in vibrance slightly over time, the pixels behind the black navigation bar won't. The end result is your navigation bar will eventually look brighter than the rest of your screen when viewing full-screen content, disrupting the uniformity of the screen.As such, we recommend to not use the black navigation for an extended period. By periodically switching it to a colored background, you can ensure the pixels age alongside the rest of the screen, limiting the effects of differential aging (AKA burn-in). Now that you know the risk, let us proceed.

What's the Difference?To keep it simple, 4K means more pixels (4096 x 2160); approximately 8 million more pixels than 1080p (1920x1080). To help you see the difference, here is a comparison of the default quality versus 4K (note that you will need a display capable of viewing 4K videos in order to really see the difference, and make sure to select "4K" from the quality menu).

In the digital age, maintaining your privacy is a never-ending battle. All sorts of companies and agencies have access to your data, and quite a few can eavesdrop on almost every method of modern communication.In an effort to push back, Open Whisper Systems has been at the forefront of encrypted mobile communications for quite some time now. Their TextSecure and RedPhone appsâ€”originally an exclusive feature in CyanogenMod ROMsâ€”have brought secure, fully-encrypted calls and texts to smartphone users around the globe.Don't Miss: How to Maintain Your Privacy on Android Hoping to consolidate things, Open Whisper Systems has recently combined their two secure communications apps into a singular entity called Signal. As a result, your calls and SMS messages can now be made safe from prying eyes by installing one simple app, and I'll show you how to do it all below.

Step 1: Install SignalAll of the functionality of TextSecure and RedPhone have been bundled together in a single, open-source app called Signal. So to get started with encrypted communications that no one can eavesdrop on, head to the following link from your Android device to install the app:Install Signal for free from the Google Play Store If you were previously a TextSecure or RedPhone user, you'll notice that Signal installs as an update to your existing TextSecure app. Basically, the only difference in the newer app is that Signal provides all of the RedPhone functionality in addition to encrypted SMS, so if you'd prefer, you can uninstall your RedPhone app at this time.Signal is also available on iOS, so your iPhone-owning friends and family can use the same platform.

Step 2: Activate Signal & Import Existing MessagesUpon launching Signal for the first time, you'll be asked to register your device. Make sure the phone number listed is correct, then tap the "Register" button and hit "Continue." From here, an encrypted SMS message will be sent to your device to automatically perform the registration process. Once you've registered, you'll be prompted to set Signal as your default SMS app. Tap the banner at the top of the screen to take care of this, then press "Yes" on the popup. From here, a second banner will appear that lets you import existing SMS messages, so tap that if you'd like to have all of your text messages brought over to Signal.

Step 3: Invite Friends to JoinAt this point, Signal itself is all set upâ€”but before you get started with calls and text messages, you should familiarize yourself with how the system works. Signal can only send fully-encrypted calls and text messages if both parties in the conversation are using the Signal app. Otherwise, all communications will take place over their standard connections.To start up a secure conversation, tap the floating action button in the bottom-right corner, then select a contact from the list. If the text input field at the bottom says "Send unsecured SMS," that means the other party does not have Signal installed on their device. To remedy this, tap the "Invite to Signal" banner at the top of the screen, then press the send button to give the other party a link to download Signal for iOS or Android.

Step 4: Call & Text with Secure EncryptionOnce the other party has installed the Signal app on their device, the text input field will say "Send Signal message." This means that any messages you send to this person will be encrypted end-to-end, so there's no way for anyone to eavesdrop on the conversation. If you'd like to make an encrypted call, look for the phone icon at the top of the message thread and make sure it has a small lock icon superimposed on top of it. If it does, tap the button, then Signal's calling interface should come up, and the banner at the top of the screen will say "Signal Call," meaning the conversation will be fully encrypted. I should note, though, that I've had problems getting that little lock icon to show up on top of the call button on all devices. In some cases, even when both parties had the Signal app installed, the call button was missing this lock icon and launched the stock dialer interface instead of the Signal Call interface. So there are apparently still some rough edges in this brand new app, but these issues should be ironed out soon enough. Out of all the new functionality introduced alongside Android 6.0 Marshmallow, a battery-saving feature called Doze Mode has been the biggest hit. Essentially, Doze waits until your device is laying flat and still, at which point it triggers an aggressive battery-saving mode that drastically increases standby time on your device.But Doze has a pair of requirements that effectively prevent it from working on some phones and tablets, even if the device is already running Android 6.0. I'll explain more about the requirements below, but suffice it to say there are several Marshmallow-powered devices that don't have Doze.So to clear up all of this confusion, developer ISDP created a simple app that will check your device for Doze compatibility. The app is completely free, and the process only takes a minute or two, so if you're curious, it's definitely worth looking into.
What You'll NeedAndroid 6.0 Marshmallow or higher "Unknown sources" enabled
Doze Requirements ExplainedSince Doze was introduced with Marshmallow, you may think that having Android 6.0 automatically means that you have the featureâ€”but that's not quite true, as Doze has two main requirements.First, your device needs a piece of hardware called a Significant Motion Detector (SMD), which is how Doze knows when your device is laying flat and still. Second, your software needs to support Google Cloud Messaging (GCM Push) so that you can still receive notifications while the device is in Doze mode.These two requirements mean that several devices that are currently running Marshmallow are not compatible with Dozeâ€”particularly older devices lacking the SMD hardware that have been updated using a custom ROM, and devices purchased in markets such as China where Google (and GCM Push) has effectively been banished. Additionally, devices running custom ROMs that don't include a Gapps package may not have GCM Push either, so this issue affects plenty of people.

Step 1: Install 'Check Doze'If you're ready to see whether or not your device supports Doze, the first thing you'll need to do is download ISDP's app, which is called Check Doze.Download the Check Doze app here (.apk) Once the APK installer file is saved to your device, tap the Download complete notification to launch it. From there, press "Install," then you'll be just about ready to check your device for Doze compatibility.

Step 2: See if Your Device Is Compatible with DozeWith the app installed, simply launch it to check your device for Doze compatibility. Almost instantly, you'll see the resultsâ€”if there are check marks next to the three main fields, you'll see a message that says "Your device supports Doze." Yep, it's really that simple. If you find that the Sensor Support field is what you're lacking, there's really nothing you can do to get Doze working on your device.
