I purchased the M7 when it first came out, upgraded to the M8 shortly after its launch, and then jumped on the M9. However, I stopped right there.Next in line was the HTC 10, the successor to the One M9. After assessing the hardware differences and handling the HTC 10 just after launch, I made the decision to stick with the M9 until the HTC 11 is eventually released. I didn't see a major advantage cost-wise in getting last year's model. Plus, having used the M9 for close to a couple years now, I've noticed several slight flaws that I've tweaked throughout time to improve performance. Now it's running better than ever.Out of the box, the HTC One M9 is generally good to go for the average user, and I would still recommend the M9 to others since the price has diminished considerably since its May 2015 launch. That is, as long as they follow my three tips below for making it run as smoothly as possible.Don't Miss: How to Get the HTC 10's Updated Stock Apps on Any Android DeviceIdeally, if the device is new to you, wait for a little while and use the stock configuration, as some of these instructions are written with the preface that the phone has accumulated at least some unique usage data.

Tip 1: Adjust App Settings to Improve BatteryOut of the box, the battery life is horrible. So to improve battery life, open your Settings app and scroll down to the second section where you'll see "Power," and give it a tap. Next, select the Battery Usage tab, where you can see the amount of data utilized by each of your apps. Make note of the apps you see in the App Usage on Battery section, as these are the ones you'll be able to modify.In the example below, you can see that Facebook is my most burdening application (which is common), so we'll make changes inside the app.Open the Facebook app, then tap on the far right icon below the search bar. From here, scroll down to the Help & Settings section, and go into the App Settings tab. As notifications (as well as actually using the app) affect both battery usage and data, we'll modify these settings. Turn off as many of the options seen below (on the right) to prevent background processes from draining battery life. I should probably disable some of these Facebook notifications. The process here is similar for other apps you'd like to tweak settings for, so go ahead and do that for each battery-hogging app you see.

Tip 2: Delete or Disable Unneeded AppsDepending on where the device originated (i.e., the service provider that originally sold the phone), different applications are installed by default. Turning off or deleting apps will prevent them from running in the background, where they consume a small amount of resources, drain battery life, and utilize data.Again, head to your phone's main Settings menu, then scroll down and select the "App Manager" entry. From here, scroll down through the apps, taking note of everything installed on the device. Find the apps you don't use, but make sure to avoid apps furnished by your service provider as well as those with "Android" in their names, as these may provide essential core functionality.As an example, I have no use for anything Amazon related on my phone, so I'll disable or uninstall everything in the app family. To do that, select "Amazon" from the list (or an app of your choice) and tap the button at the top that reads "Disable" to deactivate the application. Repeat this process for other unwanted applications. If the option is provided, tapping "Uninstall" will get rid of the apps entirely. I like Amazon but the apps don't add any value to my phone.

Tip 3: Get Rid of BlinkFeedBlinkFeed is an app that aggregates your social media accounts and places them on the home screen in a messy kind of display. The idea is neat, but everything the app does can be accomplished with specific widgets that offer better customization with less information clutter. Plus, BlinkFeed consumes resources, which is probably its biggest downside.So from your home screen, drag two fingers together in a pinching motion to open an interface for modification. The far left tile should be BlinkFeed. Hold a finger down on the tile directly to the right of BlinkFeed until the options "Set as Home" and "Remove" appear at the top of the screen, then drag that particular tile to "Set as Home." Finally, hold a finger on the BlinkFeed tile until these options appear again, then drag it to the "Remove" option. (1) This is BlinkFeed. (2) Things are better without BlinkFeed. Though the HTC One M9 may not be the most powerful phone on the market today, it's still a great device by today's standards. If you have an M9 and don't want to go through the process of rooting, the tips provided above will increase the performance considerably.If you're planning on purchasing a M9 or already own the phone, make sure to complete these steps to speed up performance and further prevent the battery from dying by the late afternoon. Google's solution is to have you send it back in, but why waste your time considering the problem can be fixed by simply adjusting a single screw. All you need to perform the adjustment is a guitar pick or coin, and a very small Phillips screwdriver. Also note, opening up your tablet will most likely void your warranty, so consider that before proceeding, though no one has reported seeing any warranty seals.

Step 1: Remove the Back of the CaseUse the plastic pick to pry the back of the case off. Start at the top and move down the sides.

Step 2: Adjust the ScrewFind the screws holding the bezel in place. One of them will be loose, but tighten all of them just to be sure.

No-Root Solution #1: Turn Off AMOLED PixelsQuite a few Android smartphones use AMOLED displays these days, which are different than a traditional LCD screen in the sense that each pixel emits its own light, so no backlight is needed. By itself, an AMOLED display is more power-friendly than an LCD screen, since any black portion of your screen is really just a set of pixels that aren't receiving any juice at that moment.But you can actually take this concept a step further and intentionally black out extra pixels on your screen to save more power. There's a very useful app that will do this for you by overlaying a black "mesh" on your screen so that every fifth pixel or so is not lighting up and wasting battery.

Rainbow text can really make your Stories pop, but it's not really an Instagram "feature," meaning it's not an easy task to accomplish. There is, however, an easy hack that takes all the work out of rainbow-colored text, making your Stories better overall.Instead of using a single boring color for on-screen words and phrases, rainbow text creates an ombre effect, giving each letter in your Story a different color shade. While a traditional rainbow would go from red to violet (or vice versa), you can start and stop with any color. It's not an option in Instagram's Story editor, but it's simple enough to go rainbow, no matter if you're using an iPhone or Android phone.Don't Miss: How to Use Type Mode for Colorful Text-Only Stories With Instagram open, either swipe right or tap on the camera icon in the top-left corner to open the Stories camera. It's pretty versatile.The only other way to create rainbow text is to highlight each letter separately, then color each accordingly, but that takes up way too much time. Although this two-thumb method is a bit tricky to perform at first, a little practice will make you an expert in no time.If you're on iOS though, be careful — once you jump back into the text editor, your rainbow text will be restored to a uniform color. On Android, your rainbow effect isn't removed just by opening the text editor, nor by typing more. In iOS, Apple provides a few live wallpapers that you can use for the background on your iPhone's lock screen, but these animated options are just wavy color shifts and ink-in-water effects. To really customize your lock screen, you can use a Live Photo for your wallpaper. If you can't find the right Live Photo, GIFs are the next best thing, and experimenting with them feels like a game almost.In order to use an animated GIF for your live wallpaper, you'll need to convert it to a Live Photo first. While Apple did add GIF support in the Photos app, they did not add GIF support to the wallpaper settings. But that's easy enough to accomplish using GIPHY for iOS. Not only can you browse their huge library of GIFs, but you can save them as Live Photos right from the app.Don't Miss: How to Get Apple's Live Fish Wallpapers Back on Your iPhone When you set your GIF-turned-Live-Photo as a "Live Photo" wallpaper, whenever you press firmly on the lock screen using 3D Touch, it will animate. Just keep in mind if you also set it as your home screen wallpaper, it will not animate there. Live wallpapers can only be animated on the lock screen. Plus, you need an iPhone 6S or newer device, not including the iPhone SE, which doesn't have 3D Touch.

Step 1: Install GIPHY: The GIF Search EngineIf for some reason you don't already have this amazing app, install "GIPHY: The GIF Search Engine" from the iOS App Store, then open it up. It's completely free, plus it will give you a mini version of the app in the iMessage app drawer so you can send GIFs easily right in your Messages app.Download: Install Giphy from the iOS App Store for free

Step 2: Find a GIF That Works WellNot all GIFs make great live wallpapers. When you're searching GIPHY for cool GIFs, make sure to think about the size and shape of your iPhone's screen, as well as where the time and date widget persists. You don't want the clock to block the best part of the animation, nor do you want the animation to be cropped on both sides because the screen's width wasn't big enough to show the whole thing.Since you can't pinch to zoom out on a GIF in the GIPHY app, which would help you judge the placement when you make a live wallpaper later, you'll have to just imagine the lock screen overlayed on the GIF in question. You can also just download a ton of GIFs and try them out one by one later.Keep in mind that portrait-shaped GIFs will work better than square- or landscape-shaped ones since your iPhone's lock screen is in portrait orientation only. Square and landscape ones may zoom in too much, cutting off too much of the action.

Step 3: Save the GIF as a Live PhotoOnce you've found a GIF you'd like to test out as a live wallpaper on your lock screen, tap the ellipsis icon (•••) under the image by the share options to expand the list. Next, select the Live Photos icon (the circles within circles), and you'll be shown two options in the popup:Save as Live Photo (Full Screen) Save as Live Photo (Fit to Screen) For live wallpapers, the best thing to do is select the "Full Screen" option. If you select "Fit to Screen," GIPHY will save it as a Live Photo with black bars on the top and bottom of the moving image, but only if the ratio of the GIF is not the same as your display. Step 4: Convert to Live Photo WallpaperAll of the GIFs you saved will be located in your Photos app inside your main "Camera Roll" album as well as the "Live Photos" album. Even though these started as GIFs, they were turned into Live Photos, so they wouldn't show up in the "Animated" album. You could add "Loop" or "Bounce" effects to the Live Photos, but you won't be able to add them as wallpapers from the Photos app.Don't Miss: Share Live Photos with Anyone by Converting Them into GIFs Once you've opened the Live Photo you want, tap the share sheet icon. From the bottom row of options, find and select "Use as Wallpaper." Adjust the placement of the animation to where it makes most sense by pinching and dragging, make sure "Live Photo" is selected, tap "Set," then tap "Set Lock Screen." You can also use this for your home screen background, but it won't be animated with 3D Touch. If you tried out some "Loop" or "Bounce" effects, you can still use those as your live wallpaper, but you'll have to do it from the Settings app. Open that up, select "Wallpaper," then "Choose a New Wallpaper." From there, tap on the album the Live Photo is in, select the animated image, then continue to set the wallpaper as above.

Step 5: Test Out Your New Live WallpaperPut your iPhone to sleep, then "Raise to Wake" or hit the Side or Home button to wake it. Once on your lock screen, press and hold firmly on the background image and watch it animate, just like you would any other Live Photo. As you could probably tell, I used a square-shaped and landscape GIF, two types I suggested not to use. However, they still work out okay, but portrait GIFs will probably be better. Bart Happy Dancing (left) and Slow Motion Liquid Balls (right) on GIPHY. To show you how much better portrait-shaped GIFs will work as live wallpapers, here are a few more examples in action that I created for my lock screen: Trippy Fish (left) and Booger Nose Picker (right) on GIPHY. If you chose to add a "Loop" or "Bounce" effect, they won't bounce or repeat indefinitely. You'll only get a glimpse of the effect in action until the Live Photo stops playing, then you'll need to let go and press the screen again to rewatch it. As you can see below, these effects don't add much to this live wallpaper. Hopefully, Apple will improve live wallpapers one day. If you've ever played around with the stock live wallpapers that Apple provides, you'll notice that when you let go of the lock screen, it animates backward into its original position. Changing your Facebook profile picture to a video is a great way to stand out from the crowd. A regular video file isn't the only option, though — if you're an iPhone user, you can also upload a Live Photo as your new profile picture to add more pizzazz to your Facebook page.Unfortunately, you can't just snap a Live Photo and post it as your new FB pic right away — you first need to convert your Live Photo into a Facebook-compatible file. So below, I'll show you three different methods to turn your Live Photo into a video, then once you've got that sorted out, I'll show you how to upload the converted video to use it as an animated Facebook profile pic.Don't Miss: How to Set Video Profile Picctures on Facebook Using Any PhoneBefore going over the different ways to convert a Live Photo into a Facebook-friendly profile video, you might want to edit your Live Photo first, if necessary. There's plenty of features you can use to accentuate your Live Photos, from adding filters, tweaking adjustments, cropping, and rotating. If that weren't enough, you can go a step beyond and pick new thumbnails, trim the clip, or make them loop or bounce.Since a Facebook profile video already loops, however, using a looping or bouncing Live Photo may be unnecessary. And you can trim clips, crop them, and choose a thumbnail image in Facebook before setting them as your profile video, so you don't have to worry about that too much beforehand.

Method 1: Convert Your Live Photo with InstagramA really easy way, though not without losing some image quality, is to convert your Live Photo into a Boomerang within Instagram Stories. So, If you don't already have Instagram, be sure to download the app to try this method out.App Store Link: Instagram (free) Once signed up and in Instagram, tap your profile icon at the top of the main page to access Stories, then swipe up to see your Story feed. If you have taken your Live Photo within the last 24 hours, then you should see it there. Tap on the Live Photo you want to use to edit in Stories. Method 2: Convert Your Live Photo with Motion StillsIf you'd rather preserve your Live Photo in full quality before uploading it as your Facebook profile pic, then I have two more options for you. First up is an app from Google called Motion Stills, which you can download from the App Store for free.App Store Link: Motion Stills (free) All your Live Photos will be shown within Motion Stills' main feed, so tap on the Live Photo you want to convert for Facebook. Your Live Photo will now be shown in constant motion, and the "Motion Stills" icon (two half circles) will be set to reduce shakiness in the video. Tap that icon to remove the effect, which will give you your original Live Photo, shakiness and all. Also, you can choose to set the video as normal (the two triangles icon with the left side in white) or bounce it (with both triangles white). When the share sheet opens up, select "Save Video" to save it to the Photos app. Once you've done that, skip ahead to the "Uploading Your Live Photo" section below. Method 3: Convert Your Live Photo with LivelyIf neither of the first two options worked for you, then an app called Lively is your best bet. You can download the Lively app either by going to the App Store or simply tapping on the link below.App Store Link: Lively (free) Once installed, you'll see all your Live Photos in a homepage feed within the app. Tap on the image that you would like to convert, and your Live Photo will now be shown as a GIF. Tap on "Movie" at the top, and if you want to crop your Live Photo and haven't done so already, Lively will let you do so before saving it as a video. You can also do this later on Facebook, as you'll soon see.When ready, tap on "Export Movie" at the bottom. From here, hit "Save" to add it to your Photos app, then move on to the next section in this article.

Uploading Your Live Photo as Your Facebook Profile VideoNow that you've converted your Live Photo, open up the Facebook app, then tap on the hamburger icon and hit "View your profile" at the top. Once there, tap on "Edit" at the bottom right of your profile icon, or you can just tap on the profile photo itself, then you'll see a menu of options. Tap on "Select Profile Video."Here, you'll be able to select the video you want to upload from your Camera Roll in Photos. Tap on the new video that you just converted, and you'll be presented with some decent options for it. You can trim the clip, crop it, remove sound, and/or change the thumbnail image. You can also tap on "Make Temporary" to make the profile video last only 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, or a custom amount of time.
