How To: View Air Quality in Apple Maps to See How Polluted Cities & Destinations Are

While the United States, in general, doesn't have the worst overall pollution, the air quality can drastically change from one day to the next. If you're particularly sensitive to pollutants in the air, there are apps that show how clean or polluted the air is in your area, as well as in cities you plan on traveling to, but Apple's making those apps less relevant with a new feature in Apple Maps.Starting in iOS 12.2 (still in beta), Apple Maps will give you the option to view the air quality index for an area in the US. With it enabled, you'll see a colored AQI label in the bottom right of the map, below the current weather conditions, which gives the reported air quality for that specific on-screen location.Air quality data in Apple Maps is provided by Apple's Weather app, which added the air quality values and health concern ratings in iOS 12. That data comes from The Weather Channel, Apple's weather partner, who collects the data from various sources, primarily the EPA's AirNow system, as well as state and local agencies.Don't Miss: Use Siri with a Third-Party Weather App Instead of Apple's To turn on the feature in iOS 12.2, open the Settings app for your iPhone, then tap "Maps" from the list. Next, look for the new Climate section, then toggle on "Air Quality Index." Interestingly, there's also a toggle for "Weather Conditions," which should be on, by default. Apple had not previously made it possible to enable or disable the weather icon overlayed on maps. Now, whenever you're zoomed into a city or neighborhood, you'll see the AQI value and its associated color. The scale goes from 0 to 500, with zero being the cleanest air and 500 being the most hazardous to your health. The general public may not feel any effects, but older adults, children, and people with lung disease are at risk from ozone exposure. Also, those same people, as well as those with heart conditions, are at greater risk from particles present in the air. 150–200, Red: Considered unhealthy for everyone. You may begin experiencing adverse health effects when exposed, and sensitive individuals may feel more serious effects. 201–300, Purple: Considered very unhealthy, with everyone exposed to polluted air indoors and outdoors being at risk for serious health effects. 301–500, Maroon: Considered hazardous. Basically, don't go outside without protective gear, as this is an emergency condition, with everyone likely to be affected with serious health issues. Considering this, if you set a wallpaper that has a black area at the top, the notch will blend in seamlessly and almost disappear while you're on your home screen. It takes a wallpaper with pixel-perfect alignment to trigger the "glitch," but we've got you covered with three easy ways to achieve this effect.
Step 1: Get a Wallpaper That Eliminates the NotchFirst, you'll need to download a specific type of wallpaper that makes the notch almost invisible. There are three different ways to do this, and each has its own benefits and drawbacks. So use either Method 1, 2, or 3 below, then move on to Step 2 for instructions on how to set the wallpaper without breaking the notch-less effect.

Method 1: Use NotchoFirst up is an app with notch-free wallpapers. The wallpapers this app creates will have watermarks unless you drop $1.99 on an in-app purchase, but the benefit here is that you can use your own images to create notch-less backgrounds without involving Photoshop.Install Notcho for free from the iOS App Store Next, open the app and choose a wallpaper. Notcho comes pre-loaded with 11 images, and you can swipe left or right to flip between these. Alternatively, you can tap the "Import" button to load up a custom image from your Photos app. Once you've settled on an image, tap "Save" to add a copy of the notch-less version to your Photos library. We'll show you how to set this wallpaper in Step 2 below.

Method 2: Download a Notch-Less WallpaperIf you're a fan of the stock wallpapers that came with your phone, or if you'd rather not pay to remove Notcho's watermark, we've got you covered. To start, head to the following link on your iPhone X.Download the notch-less stock wallpapers by Gadget Hacks Note: This is just a sample gallery. Next, select any or all of the images in the folder, then tap the "Download" button that appears at the top of your screen. Once you've done that, tap the share sheet icon while viewing any image, then choose "Save Image."

Method 3: Make Your Own Notch-Less Wallpaper with PhotoshopIf you have access to Photoshop, you can make a notch-less wallpaper in less than a minute using this PSD file. Just open the file, select the bottom-most layer, then drag any image into the Photoshop window to place it behind the blackout frame that hides the notch. You may have to resize your image to make it fit, but when you're done, just save the file as a JPG and send it over to your iPhone X.

Step 2: Set the Notch-Less Wallpaper as Your BackgroundRegardless of whether you opted to use Notcho, one of our custom wallpapers, or made your own with Photoshop, the next step will be the same. Open your Photos app and select the notch-less image that you downloaded from us or saved from Notcho. From there, tap the share sheet icon at the bottom of the screen, then select "Use as Wallpaper." This next part is very important: Make sure to select "Still" instead of "Perspective" on the wallpaper picker screen — otherwise, the effect would be misaligned. Once you've done that, don't touch anything else or move the wallpaper around. Just tap "Set," then choose either "Set Lock Screen," "Set Home Screen," or "Set Both."

Step 3: Enjoy Your Notch-Free Home ScreenOnce you've set the wallpaper, you'll now have a notch-free home screen! This effect even works on the lock screen if you opted to set the image as the background there as well. Because OLED screens simply don't light up black pixels, the black portion of the wallpaper is just as black as the iPhone X's tiny bezels and the notch itself, making it virtually indistinguishable. Step 2: Unzip Your FileOnce the file is done downloading, unzip it with any free extraction software. You should get a folder once it's done unzipping, with the same name of the zip file. The adt-bundle folder should have three files inside of it—eclipse, sdk, and SDK Manager.

Step 3: Copy Folder to Hard DriveOnce your folder is done unzipping, you'll have to move or copy and paste it onto your hard drive. The adt-bundle folder might take a bit to copy, since it's pretty large, so be patient.

Step 4: Copy ADB URL TextOnce it's done copying, double-click on the adb-bundle folder and then double-click on the sdk folder. Next, double click on the platform-tools folder. Finally, there should be a file titled adb, which you will single-click on and then go into the search bar above it and copy the entire line of URL text. You will need this for Step 5.

Step 5: Go into System SettingsNow, head over to Control Panel -> System and Security -> System. In System, double-click on Advanced system settings on the left. Click on Environmental Variables.... Scroll down and find Path, click on it once and then click Edit.... Edit System Variable will pop up. Where it says Variable value:, you'll need to click on it and go all the way to the far right of the text, without deleting any of it.Add a semicolon to the end of it and then paste the ADB URL that you copied at the end of Step 4 after the semicolon. Once you've pasted it, press OK on all of your opened windows until you've exited all of them.

Step 6: Testing ADB OutTo make sure that ADB now works on your computer, open CMD (Command Prompt) or Terminal (for Macs) and type in adb and then press enter. If ADB is working, you should see something like in the picture below. You should now be ready to sideload applications onto your Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch! It keeps certain files on your computer obscured from prying eyes.The application works very simply. You can find the download here. Once you open the .dmg file, you should see this. Drag the folder titled Obscurity to anywhere that you want. Double-click on the Obscurity folder. It's blank. That's the program going into effect. Now go back and right-click over the Obscurity folder and choose 'Show Package Contents'. Reminds you of your iPhoto library, right? You should now see what files are really on this folder. Drag all the files that you want kept secret into this folder. Not only does it hide these files, but it keeps them from being found by Spotlight. The folder doesn't modify or edit your files at all, so feel free to keep them hidden for as long as you need. Most adapters sell for less than $10, and once you plug it into your vehicle, you'll just need a good app to help you make sense of all the data it can gather.The trouble is, while there are many free OBD-scanning apps on the Play Store, few are actually good. In addition to that, it can be hard to find the right OBD-II adapter for your particular phone and vehicle model. So to help clear everything up, we'll show you how to find a good Bluetooth-enabled OBD scanner, then cover the two best OBD-scanning apps below.Don't Miss: How to Change Your Own Oil — A Beginner's Guide

Connecting an OBD-II Adapter to Your CarOBD-II is a standardized protocol in all vehicles made since 1996, and it's used to transmit information from your car's computer to code readers and other diagnostic tools. With the right adapter, data from your car's OBD-II port can be transferred to your phone over Bluetooth.Such adapters can be purchased for around $10 from Amazon, though, I went with an ELM327 from eBay, as it only cost $3.58. You don't have to use a specific model, so you can easily find something comparable by googling "OBD Bluetooth" or "Bluetooth OBD-II." Just make sure that whatever adapter you purchase supports both OBD-II and Bluetooth.Once you've got your adapter, all you'll need to do is plug it into your car's diagnostic port, though finding this connection is tricky sometimes. It should be somewhere underneath your steering wheel on the driver's side, but if you can't seem to locate the port, CarMD will help you find it. Pairing the Adapter with Your PhoneOnce you've got the adapter hooked up to your car's OBD-II port, it's time to pair the device with your phone. So open the Bluetooth settings menu on your phone and begin to scan for devices, then quickly unplug the OBD-II adapter from your car for a few seconds before plugging it right back in. Once you've done that, turn your key forward to the "On" position.At this point, your OBD-II adapter should appear in the list of nearby Bluetooth devices. So on your phone, select the OBD-II adapter, then enter the PIN when prompted, which is normally "0000" or "1234" (if neither of these work, refer to the paperwork that came with your adapter). The device should now be connected to your smartphone. (1) In most cases, it will be the only new device found. (2) My PIN ended up being 1234. After pairing the OBD-II adapter, you may need to open whatever app you choose and go through the connection process for that specific application as well. Note that some will have a limited time frame to connect, so it's best to attempt connection soon after plugging the adapter into the diagnostic port.Once the pairing process is fully complete, you'll be able to use your OBD-II adapter by simply plugging it into your car, turning the key to the "On" position, then opening the diagnostics app on your phone. So without further ado, I'll give you a rundown on the two best OBD-II apps I found while testing.

1. PistonThe first option we have for you is an app called Piston, which looks good, performs well, and doesn't cost to download or use. You may need to use it in conjunction with another free app called OBD2 Pro Check Engine Car DTC for best results, but I'll expand on that later.Install Piston for free from the Google Play Store After installing Piston, open the app and connect to the adapter in your vehicle by tapping the car icon at the top of the screen. Once connected, add the systems you'd like to monitor by tapping the gauge icon at the top and checking the box next to each sensor you'd like to view on the main screen. Options here include battery voltage, coolant temperature, and RPMs, so it's easy to keep an eye on all of your car's various systems. (1) It doesn't hurt to add more than required until you know what the app will pickup. (2) Probably not the safest idea to capture screenshots while driving. If you'd just like to see why your check engine light came on, tap the hamburger icon in the corner, then select "Faults" to reveal errors stored in your car's computer. This should pull data for each fault and display the diagnostic code — however, some will lack a description.If you'd like to get more accurate data, tap the three-dot menu button at the top of the screen, then head to "Settings." From here, navigate to the Advanced section and check the box next to the "Wait longer ..." option. While you're in here, you may also want to change the "Units system" option, as the app uses metric by default. (1) My gas mileage is awful. (2) Personally, I'm not too concerned as I've been aware of these issues prior to testing my car. One downside to Piston is that it can be a little vague when describing certain fault codes. So if you're unsure about any readings, we'd recommend installing OBD2 Pro Check Engine Car DTC, then searching for the code number to find more details about the topic. After it installs, all you need to do is select the manufacturer from the top menu then enter the code.

2. DashCommandThe second app we have for you is a free download and will function for a total 30 minutes before prompting you to purchase the full version for $9.99. It offers more reporting metrics and different chart layouts when compared to Piston, so if you're an avid hobbyist or an automotive professional, this is probably the better option.Install DashCommand for free from the Google Play Store After opening the app, you'll need to agree to the terms of service, then perform a couple steps for setup to receive the most accurate information. First, tap "Vehicle" from the main menu to add information about your ride (year, make, model, and engine). Once this is complete, back out of the menu and connect to the OBD-II adapter by tapping the connection icon in the middle of the screen. If you have any problems connecting, unplug your OBD-II adapter for a few seconds, then try again. (1) I wasn't sure what "type" meant initially. (2) The circle in the center turns green when successfully connected. Once connected, you'll be able to see real-time data in various charts with almost no latency by tapping "Dashboards" and selecting one of the options at the bottom. Outside of this particular area, several other reports and features can be accessed, most of which are free during the evaluation period. Unfortunately, reading engine codes does require purchasing the full version, so if this is your primary concern and you don't want to spend extra money, use the Piston app for this capability.If you find the gritty details furnished by this application useful and you're not concerned about the lack of diagnostic codes in the free version, it is simple enough to reset the evaluation period. Go into your settings menu and find the "Storage" item in the list. Next, navigate to "DashCommand," and once inside, tap the "Clear data" button. To get a full brief on what the app can do, download and read through DashCommand User Manual. (1) The fuel economy tab hurts to look at for my personal situation. (2) It's mildly irritating this isn't included in the trial version. (3) Clearing the data deletes some stored details though it should save manufacturer information. If you're interested in taking control of issues with your vehicle, these apps will save a considerable amount of time with the diagnostic process. Further, those upgrading components in a car can use readouts to uncover data about the actual outputs after replacing installing a new part.Which OBD-II adapter did you go with, and which app did you choose? The same amount will get you a full month of unlimited streaming, and you don't even have to leave your couch. For example, Dexter can be streamed in the UK no problem, but here in the States? Nope. Not a chance. That's why redditor zhuki created a script for the popular Hola Unblocker that lets you switch back and forth between different regions on Netflix to get the biggest selection of movies and TV shows possible. That way, you have access to tons of content that may not be available in your country.
Note: This Hack Is Just for Streaming-Only AccountsThe only real downside is that only streaming accounts can use the script. Hybrid accounts (those with streaming and DVDs) can only view U.S. content, so those with hybrid accounts will receive an error message when trying to view content not available in the states. Unfortunately, the script will only work on computers, not on smartphones, tablets, or game consoles.

The Hola icon will be replaced with the flag of the country you're currently viewing. To switch again, click on the flag and choose a new country.

Step 4: Find New Movies to Watch!With your newly expanded library, figuring out what to watch will probably be the hardest part of using the script. With so many different regions, there's a lot of content to sift through. A site called Can I Stream It? is great for finding out what's currently available to stream on Netflix in your country.If you want to search across all of the different regions, Moreflicks shows what's available to stream in 10 countries. Just click the arrow next to Netflix and choose a country from the drop-down menu. Some of your favorites may not be available where you live, but Finland might have them.

Is It Worth It?Yes. Both installing and using the script are incredibly easy, and it really does give you access to a ton of movies and shows you couldn't normally stream. For example, Netflix UK has Dexter, The Hobbit, The Shawshank Redemption, Downton Abbey, Zombieland, and even the newest episodes of Breaking Bad: Season 5 (some call it Season 6). Flip over to Brazil and you've got American Psycho, V for Vendetta, and Archer: Season 4. But sorry, if you were hoping to use this hack to continue watching Fringe: Season 5 after Netflix pulled it from their streaming catalog just over a week ago (they erroneously published it early), you're going to have to wait until September 12th, because Season 5 is not available in any other countries. Step 3: Extract the CF Auto Root ZIPOnce you've downloaded the CF Auto Root package, locate the file on your hard drive and extract the contents of the ZIP. You can extract the files to any folder on your computer, but make sure to remember this folder's location for later.

Step 4: Root with Odin (Samsung Devices)Next, if you're using a Samsung device, I'll outline the root process in this step. Otherwise, if you're using any other Android phone or tablet, skip ahead to Step 5 to see the rooting instructions for your device.First, you'll have to put your Samsung device into Download Mode. From a powered-off state, press and hold the volume down, home, and power buttons simultaneously. At this point, you'll see a warning message—but like it says, just press the volume up button to enter Download Mode. After that, connect your phone to your PC with a USB data cable, then the rest of the work will be done on Windows. Next, head to the folder on your PC where you extracted the contents of the CF Auto Root ZIP. From here, right-click the Odin3-v3.X.X.exe file, then choose "Run as administrator." Once Odin is running, wait until the box under the "ID:COM" field turns blue. Once that happens, leave all of the options selected exactly as they are, then click the "AP" button near the center of the window. At this point, a file browser menu will pop up, so use this navigate to the folder where you extracted the contents of the CF Auto Root ZIP. Finally, select the CF-Auto-Root-XXX-XXX-XXX.tar.md5 file, then click "Open." From here, wait until the Log tab shows a message that says "Leave CS," then click the "Start" button to root your device. The entire root process will happen automatically, and when it's finished, your phone will reboot back into Android. Otherwise, to make sure everything went off without a hitch and you're successfully rooted now, skip ahead to Step 6.

Step 5: Root with Fastboot (All Other Devices)If you're using a non-Samsung device, the actual rooting process is a tiny bit different. First, you'll need to put your device into bootloader mode. From a powered-off state, press and hold the volume down and power button simultaneously. Once you arrive at the bootloader menu (pictured below), connect your phone to your computer with a USB data cable. Back on your computer, navigate to the folder where you extracted the CF Auto Root ZIP earlier. From here, you'll find 2 folders and 3 files—root-linux.sh, root-mac.sh, and root-windows.bat. Double-click the file that corresponds to your computer's operating system to begin. At this point, a command prompt window will inform you that CF Auto Root is about to unlock your bootloader and root your device. When you're ready, press any key to execute the rooting script. From here, you should see a red Android logo on your phone's screen, and you'll see a wall of text scrolling by—this is CF Auto Root doing its job and rooting your device. When the process is complete, your phone will automatically reboot, and you'll be rooted. Step 6: Verify RootWhen you get back up, your device should be fully rooted. To verify this, download an app called Root Checker from developer joeykrim.Install Root Checker for free from the Google Play Store Once you've installed the app, simply open it up and tap "Verify Root." From here, tap "Grant" when prompted to give the app Superuser access, and if everything went off without a hitch, you'll see a message saying "Congratulations!
