At night, no matter how dim my Android's screen gets, it never seems to be enoughâ€”especially when I'm in bed. In fact, in pure darkness, the lowest brightness setting on my Android devices end up giving me a headache that keeps me up for hours.But there are ways to make an Android's display dimmer than the default minimum brightness, whether it's for easing the strain on your eyes (or significant other's eyes) at night, or for using in a dark movie theater (not that I condone that). 1. Screen Filter: Easy, Simple, & Straight to the PointWith over a million downloads, Screen Filter from developer Brett Slatkir is kind of a classic now, and for good reason. The app doesn't include any more features or preferences than it needs, which means it's fairly simple to use.Install Screen Filter for free from the Google Play Store Once installed, a home screen icon will work like a toggle, automatically dimming your display when tapped. To access the settings, pull down your notification shade and tap the Screen Filter notification. Within the app's settings, you can select the brightness level that's applied when you tap the icon. As a precaution, when you select a low brightness level, you'll be prompted to confirm the brightness. If not, the app will automatically disable it, which comes in handy if you accidentally make your entire display black.

2. Lux Lite: For Those Who Want More ControlLux Lite, from developer Vito Cassisi, isn't as basic as Screen Filter, and that's why I like it. In addition to the various settings it offers, the app provides several profiles that allow you to set up different brightnesses, then switch between profiles depending on the environment you're in.Install Lux Lite from the Google Play Store To easily configure the app, tap the icon and select a brightness. You can specify a profile and how the brightness level adjusts to it. The preset profiles are definitely a nice touch by the developer. Using the gear icon, you can access a plethora of settings that Lux has to offer. Fine tune the app to function the way you want with all the additional preferences, like Dynamic backlight adjustment or "Shake to brighten."

3. Screen Filter Mod: An Option for Rooted DevicesFor those of you who are rooted and want to apply an additional brightness slider in your notification tray that allows you to go below the minimum brightness level, then take a look at our previous guide covering the awesome Screen Filter Xposed module:How to Lower the Minimum Brightness on Android (Root) While these apps are useful when laying in bed late at night, they don't necessarily make it easier for you to fall asleep. But in the glorious technological age we live in, there are plenty of apps that actually make math and problem solving fun, even a little bit addictive.Below, I've listed my top ten favorite (and free) math-related apps and games that you need to have on your Android, in no particular order. Math fans, and even the haters, will enjoy these all the same. Trust me, if I like them, that's saying a lot considering how much I hate anything mathematics.

1. LumosityProbably the most well known app on this list, Lumosity provides numerous games designed by researchers and scientists to help you exercise your brain. You can select between various areas of focus and even map your progress in those areas while using the app. More than any other games and apps on this list, Lumosity pins its value on helping your brain achieve at higher levels through its meticulously designed mini-games. It should be noted that results are mixed about the true benefits of brain "trainers" and how they may or may not positively affect your brain. But honestly, these Lumosity games are fun to play regardless, and they are certainly stimulating. Lumosity is available on both the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store. 4. yHomeworkWhyyyyy?! That's something I've asked many times when I was looking at a math problem I had no idea how to solve. "Why are there so many letters? I thought this was math?"yHomework is a useful, free app that allows folks like me to input a complex problem, find the solution, and go over the steps on getting to the answer. Just enter in the difficult problem and tap "Solve." That's a very important thing for anyone trying to learn. An answer is great, but knowing how you got that answer will make everything easier down the road. There are a few drawbacks, however. For starters, the application can run very slowly at times, which can be a test of patience. Secondly, it works off a credit system, where each problem solved costs 1 credit. When you run out of credits, you can get more with an in-app purchase of $0.99 for 20 credits, $1.99 for 100, and $4.99 for unlimited credits. From the opening screen, you can select between timed 30-second games, 10 equantion formulas per round, or unlimited play. Basically, you select either YES or NO depending on whether the given equation is correct or incorrect. The faster you do it with the least amount of errors, the higher your score will be. Test yourself and review your session breakdown with insightful analytics. Just like Lumosity, there is a premium version, Elevate Pro, that includes a bunch of extra features like member rankings, premium content, and access to all games. 10. TEDOkay, this one's for me, because I love TED talks. They cover subjects from the power of vulnerability to the power of introverts to brain magic and body language. Setting Up DrivemodeWhen you initially open Drivemode, you'll be asked to enter a few locations that you frequently visit: home, work, and one more. After that's finished you'll be sent to the main page, where you can choose a main app for directions and music (streaming or otherwise).Under directions, you'll see the three locations you entered earlier as options to pick for a destination when using Drivemode. Under the Communication header, you can choose to accept or decline as well as ignore or forward text messages and phone calls.

Accessing Drivemode's Driving OptionsHit "Start Driving" to send Drivemode into action. You'll be transported to your app of choice, which I chose to be Google Maps. From anywhere on the screen, you can swipe left and right to switch between songs, swipe up and down to change the volume, and tap on the screen to play and pause. Music controls will appear only while you touch the screen and become transparent when you're not.

Setting Up Additional Configurations in DrivemodeDrivemode also has many settings that you can configure by selecting "Settings" from the three-dash menu at the top left. From this menu, you can enable launching the app automatically when it detects you're driving, add preset messages, and add a built-in Spotify player. If you use a rotating car-mount, you can use Drivemode in landscape mode as well. Tap the second toggle to enable the Accessibility plugin, then scroll down and select "bxActions - Bixby button." From there, tap the toggle at the top of the screen, then press "OK" on the popup. After that, tap on your back button to head back to the bxActions app, then select "Done."

Step 4: Enable the ServiceIf it didn't do so automatically, tap on the play icon to start the service manually. Doing so will take you to a "Buttons" page, so follow the previous step to toggle "Bixby button" on. Exit out of "Buttons" once you're done granting permission and go back to the main page.bxActions gives you an option to further optimize its performance by granting it more permissions via ADB commands. Once done, the app will be able to distinguish between long and short presses, and give it the ability to directly intercept commands as opposed to constant tracking via the usage access. Tapping on on "Please unlock permissions using a PC" reveals the instructions for this step. Please note that running ADB commands to grant bxActions further permissions it totally optional, and we've found that the app runs perfectly fine without it. Step 5: Choose a New Action for Your Bixby ButtonThe Bixby button on your S9 is now ready for remapping. Tap on "Actions" within the main page to get started, then select "Bixby" once you're inside. From there, tap on "Standard action" to proceed to the "Choose action" page. The "Choose action" page contains a list of all the available commands you can assign to your phone's Bixby button. Even if you opted to get the free version, you still have a slew of options to choose from.
