Hulu 101: How to Cast Shows & Movies to Your TV
Your smartphone is the perfect place to watch Hulu on the go. Whether you're looking to catch up on your shows in a hotel, or your phone is the only screen available, mobile streaming can be a lifesaver. But what about when you have access to a TV? Wouldn't you rather watch your favorite Hulu Original on the big screen than on your comparatively tiny smartphone? If you're looking for a way to cast Hulu to your TV, chances are, you already have a way to do it. Whether you have an iPhone or Android device, an Apple TV or a PlayStation, you may just have what you need to get you casting right now. So below, we'll go over the three primary methods to send Hulu content from your phone to your TV.Don't Miss: Hulu 101: How to Pick the Plan That's Right for You

Method 1: Google Cast (Any Phone)For Google Cast, you will need a Google Cast-enabled device such as a Sony smart TV, Nvidia Shield, Android TV box, or a Chromecast dongle. With Google Cast, you don't need the Hulu app installed on your compatible device, only on the smartphone. This feature is built directly into the Hulu app, and it works on any mobile device running iOS 10.0 and higher or Android 5.0 and higher. So to try it out, just follow these steps:Make sure both your smartphone and your Google Cast device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure your compatible device is connected to the actual internet, not just the Wi-Fi network. Open the Hulu app on your smartphone. Tap the cast icon and select the device you wish to cast to. Choose a video to watch, and the title will cast automatically to the TV. Once the video loads up, your iPhone or Android device will give you on-screen controls to fast forward, rewind, pause, or play the video, as well as change the audio or subtitle settings. Go ahead and browse Hulu from here, or leave the app altogether — the video will continue to play. If you have an Android device, you can also mirror your display so that everything on your phone will be shown on the TV. Keep in mind, if your phone is in portrait mode, the mirrored display will only take up a small portion of your TV. Landscape mode will properly fill your TV's display. To mirror your Android's display to a Google Cast device:Make sure your smartphone and Google Cast device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Open the Google Home app. Choose "Cast screen / audio" from the side navigation menu, then tap "Cast screen / audio." Select your Google Cast device. If you have a Nexus, Pixel, or newer Samsung device, you can bypass these instructions by using the "Cast Screen" Quick Settings tile to broadcast your screen to your Chromecast device. Then, to disconnect and end your casting session, just tap the cast icon again, then choose "Disconnect."

Method 2: Mobile Remote (Any Phone)Hulu offers a mobile remote feature to beam content from your smartphone to a compatible device, such as certain smart TVs, Xbox or PlayStation consoles, Wii U, and many more.To get casting with this method, make sure the Hulu app is installed on your game console, smart TV, or set-top box. Then, log into the Hulu app on your TV, and you'll be all set to start casting:Make sure both your smartphone and compatible device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure your compatible device is connected to the actual internet, not just the Wi-Fi network. With the Hulu app open on both devices, tap the cast icon on your smartphone, which looks like a TV with the Wi-Fi symbol in the corner. Select the device you wish to cast to. Choose a title. Your smartphone will cast your choice to your device, and you will have control on the smartphone itself. From here, you can play a video from your smartphone, which will give you on-screen controls to fast forward, rewind, pause, or play the video, as well as change the audio or subtitle settings. You can also continue to browse Hulu, or even leave the app — your video will continue to play as you open another app on your phone.Disconnecting is similar to Chromecast — simply tap the cast button again, but this time choose "Disconnect" on the popup.Note: This mobile remote is not the same as DIAL (or Discover and Launch). Hulu currently has no support for DIAL, meaning this method is incompatible with Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

Method 3: AirPlay (iPhone, HTC Devices)If you have an Apple TV (2nd Generation or higher), AirPlay is only a tap away. AirPlay is basically Apple's version of Chromecast. iPhones can beam their content to an Apple TV, and there are two ways to do this — screen mirroring or casting video content only. AirPlay is available on iPhones running iOS 4.2 or higher.Screen mirroring will beam the contents of your display to your TV. Anything and everything that appears on your iPhone will be broadcast for anyone in sight, so make sure you understand that before following these steps:Make sure the Apple TV is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. While in the Hulu app on your iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the display to reveal the Control Center. Tap "AirPlay Mirroring," then choose your Apple TV. If a passcode appears on your TV screen, make sure to input that into the spot on your iPhone to continue. If you're just looking to cast Hulu to your Apple TV, I'd recommend going with this second solution. Your iPhone's secrets will stay safe — only the Hulu content you'd like to see on your TV will be broadcast:Make sure the Apple TV is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. Make sure both devices are connected to the internet. While in the Hulu on your iPhone, tap the AirPlay icon, which looks like a TV with a triangle on the bottom. Select your Apple TV. That's it! From there, just find a Hulu title you'd like to watch, tap it, and let your phone do the rest. Disconnecting is just as easy — tap the AirPlay button, then tap iPhone.HTC devices — starting with the 10— can also use Apple's AirPlay. To connect with an HTC device, you will have to go through the HTC Connect app instead of the Control Center. That's all there is to casting with Hulu. If you have a smartphone and any of the above compatible devices, you have all you need to get started. What's your Hulu/casting combination? How To: Stream PC Games to Your Phone Using AMD Link

How To: Stream PC Games to Your Phone Using AMD Link
It is a great time to be a mobile gamer. Not only are there millions of mobile games on the Play Store and App Store, but thanks to some recent developments, we can also even play PC games. AMD recently released an app, which, among other things, lets you play your favorite PC games on your phone. The AMD Link app lets you stream PC games to a mobile device. It works on both iOS and Android. While on your home network, you can play your favorite games on your phone. Now you might be wondering, how will the games run on my phone's SoC, my PC can barely handle these games? The answer is the games stream over the air. Your PC handles all the processing and mirrors its output over a wireless network to your phone.
Requirements:iPhone, iPad, or Android device iOS 10 or newer or Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer Windows PC running Windows 7 64-bit or Windows 10 64-bit AMD Radeon graphics card (minimum 2 GB VRAM) AMD Radeon Settings Adrenalin Edition 2019 (version 18.5 or newer)

Step 1: Download the Latest Version of AMD LinkAMD Link connects your phone to your computer and its AMD-powered graphics card. This app gives you access to several features, including performance monitoring, voice controls, game capture, and game streaming. To start, install the newest version of the app from your phone's respective app store.Install AMD Link: Android (free) | iOS (free) Please note that this will not work with Apple TV or Android TV. If you wish to use this app to play your PC games on your television, you will need to connect your phone or tablet to the TV via the data port using adapters such as USB-C to HDMI or Lightning to HDMI. Just know this additional connection will introduce more latency. Also, unlike some other options, this service will only work if your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as your PC. Therefore, turn on Wi-Fi now and connect to the same network as your PC. Ideally, if available, use the 5 GHz network, as it is capable of higher bandwidth despite its shorter range.

Step 2: Connect Your Phone to Your ComputerOnce installed, you'll need to connect your mobile device to your computer. The connection can be accomplished in one of two ways, with one method being much easier than the other. Either way, preparing your computer for this connection is the same for both methods. On your computer, open Radeon Settings and select "AMD Link." On the new page, turn on "AMD Link Server" by selecting the toggle. Then choose "Add Device." A QR code will now appear. You'll need to scan this using the AMD Link app on your phone. Open the app on your phone and choose "Add new PC." You will be presented with two options: "Scan QR Code" or "Manual Input."

The Easy WayThe easiest and preferred way is to scan the QR Code, so choose the green "Begin" button just below "Scan QR Code" to open up the barcode scanner (Android users will be prompted with a permission request from the AMD Link app which you must allow first). With your mobile device, scan the QR code on your computer.

The Hard WayIf you're not taken to a new page after scanning the QR code, you will likely need to use the second option, manual input. On your phone, select the green "Begin" below "Manual Input" and press "Next" until this button now reads "Manual Input." You'll see a new page requesting four lines of information: Server IP, Server Name, Server Port, and Server PIN.To find this information, return to your computer and choose "Manual Input" on the same page where the QR code was displayed. The requested information will appear below the toggle. Input each line in the corresponding text box on your phone and choose "Connect." Be aware that this information provided by your computer is timed. Once the timer expires, the PIN will change and you may be kicked out of the QR code page on your computer. If this happens, repeat the process by choosing "Add Device," then selecting the "Manual Input" toggle.

If It Still Doesn't WorkIf your phone still won't connect, you might need to make an exception for AMD Link in Windows Defender to allow for a connection. To do this, open Settings and choose "Update & Security." Select "Windows Security" and choose "Open Windows Defender Security Center." A new window should appear titled "Windows Defender Security Center." Choose "Virus & threat protection," then select "Virus & threat protection settings." Choose "Add or remove exclusions," then select the "Add an exclusion" button and choose "File." Select the following file: C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext\RadeonSettings.exe Once added, retry either of the above methods to connect your phone.

Step 3: Play PC Games on Your PhoneIf everything worked, you should see a new page with a series of five buttons along the bottom. Select the button which looks like a game controller. You will see a list of all the games installed on your computer. If you don't see a specific game, you can add it manually or scan your system by selecting the Gaming tab in Radeon Settings and choosing "Add." To stream a game, choose a game from the list. This will open the game on your computer and simultaneously mirror it to your phone along with an array of on-screen buttons to navigate the game.Be aware you'll need to sign into any game launcher first to launch the game. This includes Steam, Epic Launcher, UPlay, Origin, etc. Some games will not start without you first being logged into their service first.

Step 4: Improve the StreamTo improve the experience, you can also adjust various options in the AMD Link app that you can access via the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner. These options will help give you the best balance of performance and video/audio quality.Ideally, you want the resolution to be the highest available, 1080p. However, if you find the stream isn't smooth, you can lower the resolution to 720p to ensure you get a higher frame rate. For frame rate, the higher the better, with 60 fps being the maximum available. Check this option for a better stream.Bit rate lets you adjust the quality of the visuals to your phone, with higher quality requiring higher internet speeds, which AMD lists next to each setting. Audio bit rate controls the quality of the game's sounds. As with the video bit rate, higher quality requires higher bandwidth from your Wi-Fi connection. To figure out the best quality of both audio and video for your stream, select "Test Stream" to evaluate the performance of your gaming experience under the current bit rate. Another feature to take advantage of is "Turn PC display off." While your game is streaming to your phone, your desktop monitor will turn off, saving power. While on-screen controls are fine, using an external controller is better. For Android, any Bluetooth controller will work, including a PS4 controller or third-party gamepads. For iOS, any MFI-certified controller will work, such as the Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i Mobile Gamepad.Don't Miss: How To Connect Your PS4 Controller to Your Android Device

Issues You Should Be Aware OfThis app is very much a work in progress. Several games just don't work using this service, so if you come across any issues, try another game. While I personally was able to play every game in my library, there are countless posts online of games which didn't work.Make sure you sign into the game launcher before trying to start remote play. Some users have reported streaming not working if a login prompt is required. Launch the game first on your PC and sign into the launcher. Then exit the game and start it back up via AMD Link. Some games will not register any input from the on-screen controls. One possibility is to use a Bluetooth controller instead and switch the controller profiles. To do this, launch a game and select the third icon in the upper-right d corner. Choose "Controller Profile 2" to use a hardware controller. This option will also remove the on-screen controls. Additionally, Android users can remap the hardware buttons of Bluetooth controllers. This feature is helpful for games which don't have fully customizable controllers, leaving you with a series of profiles or no options at all.To remap your hardware buttons, select the game controller icon after establishing a link with your computer. Swipe right to reveal a new page containing each Controller Profile. Select "Controller Profile 2" and choose the second icon in the upper-right corner. On the new page, you can now select the game input and choose whichever button on your controller to register that action. For example, when the game prompts you to press "B," you can press "X" on your controller instead. Because this is mirroring the game using Wi-Fi, there will be a noticeable amount of latency. You can minimize this by having your PC connected via ethernet and your phone connected to the 5 GHz network. Even still, there will be a lot of latency, so we recommend avoiding competitive games such as fighting games and FPS titles unless you plan to play against easier opponents. When this works, it works pretty well. With a little help from the high refresh rate Razer Phone 2 and the Razer Raiju Mobile, I was able to create a replacement to my handheld gaming devices (at least while on my home network). It's far from perfect, but it does offer a comparable experience to Google's Stadia and Microsoft's Project Xcloud, and with your own games. If you run into any issues with a specific game, let us know in the comment below so that other users are aware and AMD will know to fix it.How to Play Your Favorite PS4 Games Remotely on Android & iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Combine WhatsApp, Facebook, & Other Messengers into One App

How To: Combine WhatsApp, Facebook, & Other Messengers into One App

With new messaging services being pushed out constantly, it can be a pain trying to keep track of them all on your Android device. We had previously shown how to stay on top of them all with a unified "inbox" app, but that still requires you to have each individual app installed. While looking for a true one-stop messenger, I came across Disa.Instead of trying to create a perfect app that contains all of the messaging functionality right when you install it, Disa uses a plugin approach. That means that you don't have to worry if your favorite service isn't supported right now because you can always create a plugin for it or just wait for someone else to release one.

Step 1: Install DisaDisa is currently in a public beta, so there are only a few stock messaging plugins available, but there are plenty of user-submitted plugins that you can find in the Disa Google+ Community. More on that below, but go ahead and install the app to get started.Install Disa for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Add ServicesWhen you first open Disa, you'll need to accept their Terms and Conditions, then you can begin adding messaging services. To install a messaging plugin, tap "Add Service" from the Settings menu. The only official plugins released by the Disa team are for SMS text messages (installed by default), Facebook, and WhatsApp. If you want to hunt for user-created plugins for services not listed, tap on "Search" from the Plugin Manager to visit the Disa.im Google+ Community. After installing a new plugin, you'll need to restart Disa. You'll then be prompted to take the necessary steps to properly set up the service (if not, you'll need to tap the paintbrush icon next to the service's name in order to add your login credentials and enable extra settings). Existing conversations will be loaded into your conversations list if you decide to allow that.

Step 3: Merge ConversationsSending and receiving messages on Disa works just like any other messaging app, but what makes it special is the ability to merge multiple conversations with the same person. With this feature, you can have your messages across Facebook, WhatsApp, and SMS in one conversation feed. To merge messages, you'll need to first tap and hold each of the target conversations from the main list, then click the merge icon on the bottom-left of the screen. Disa will then ask you to select the service you want to use to reply to the conversation, but that can always be switched by tapping the service icon in the message text field. Once a conversation is merged, the messages from each service will be labeled so you know exactly where they are coming from. There will also be a new Nexus-inspired icon next to the merged contact's name.

Step 4: Make Message BackupsDisa comes with a built-in message backup service that can be used to save and restore your messages from your phone's internal storage or Google Drive, and scheduled backup support is coming soon. Tap the settings option from the overflow menu, then tap the cloud icon on the top-right to enable this service. Once you are at the back-up menu, tap "Manual Backup" and wait for the process to complete. To restore your messages, tap "Restore," then select the backup file you want to use.

Step 5: Additional SettingsYou can also find options to change your emoji style, keyboard functionality, and notification style from within the app's settings. Follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: Start Your Own Remote Business & Make Money as a Freelancer with Upwork
If you're on the hunt for a profitable side-gig, or even a completely new way to to make money, you'll want to take a look at Upwork, a leading freelancing platform that connects skilled freelancers with clients from all over the world.Upwork allows you to build your own online business by working remotely in fields such as web and mobile app development, SEO, social media marketing, content writing, graphic design, and admin. As businesses post jobs, which can be anything from short-term tasks to full-time contract work, suitable candidates are matched for them to consider. When a freelancer is hired, Upwork provides a platform for both parties to discuss the project, share files, and collaborate until the job has been completed.I had meant to include Upwork's mobile application as one of the top apps you can use to make extra money, but I felt it was worthy of its own article. Particularly as I had the opportunity to chat with Shoshana Deutschkron, VP of Communications and Brand at Upwork, who took the time to answer some questions I had about the service. Check out the full Q&A below, as Shoshana explains how it all works and why Upwork is unique among other freelancing platforms.Download the application via the link below and read on to learn how you can start making money on your own terms as an Upwork freelancer.Install Upwork: Android (free) | iOS (free)
Before You BeginYou should know that Upwork uses a virtual token system called Connects, which are spent each time you submit to a job. You can read more about Upwork's Connects system here.Upwork also provides a handy free eBook and series of modules that cover best practices and advice to help get you up and running. Topics covered include:Best practices for a strong profile Finding projects and clients Submitting proposals Managing communications Getting Paid

Step 1: Create Your ProfileOpen the Upwork application and tap "Sign Up" — you'll then be redirected to apply via your mobile browser. You can also choose to sign up on Upwork's desktop website and return to using the mobile application once you've been approved. After verifying your email, you can pick the type of work you want to do and specify up to four subcategories. I opted to work as a voiceover actor and writer, specializing in Article & Blog Writing, Copywriting, Creative Writing, and Web content.List your skills and select your level of experience, then tap "Save and Continue" to move on. The next screen will allow you to add a profile photo and professional overview. You'll also be asked to choose a professional title that helps you stand out from the crowd, for example: Web Content Specialist.
Step 2: Sell Yourself, but Don't OversellCompetition is fierce, so selling your skills is paramount, but note that all applications are screened, so make sure to be up-front and honest throughout! Never overstate your capabilities, and don't try to be too many things to too many people. It's better to under-promise and over-deliver than the other way around. Upwork states that your application may be rejected if it's determined that the marketplace has no opportunities for you based on your skills and experience.Focus on your expertise, by starting with what you do exceptionally, or differently than most. After that, focus on the areas in which you have the most experience. You should also make an effort to clearly define your personal brand and identify your target market by selecting the types of businesses and industries in which you have the most experience. These are likely to be the types of clients that you know and understand best, so you'll want to position your brand so that it addresses their specific wants and needs. As you continue to work, you'll naturally develop further experience and connections that will provide an opportunity for you to expand into other markets.Once you've filled everything out and validated your account with a phone number, you'll be able to submit your application for approval. New profiles are usually approved within 24 hours — in the meantime, Upwork will invite you to look at their premium membership plans. Basic is free and available to everyone, and upgrading to a Plus plan provides additional Connects and other privileges, including dedicated support and handpicked premium talent for clients.

Step 3: Submit to JobsWith your profile fully completed, you're all set and ready to start submitting to jobs. Upwork will suggest suitable jobs, but you can also perform a manual search if you're looking for something specific. Just tap the search box, which also lets you filter jobs by location, category, job type, experience level, client history, project length, and hours per week. For the purposes of this guide, I ran a search for voice actor and found the voiceover narration job seen in the gallery below. The job post clearly details the work involved, the required skill level, and the pay I would receive if selected for the role. I thought I'd be a good fit so I decided to apply. Whatever job you find, the application process is the same. Tap "Submit Proposal" to begin and you'll be able to submit your bid, state your terms, and specify a timeframe for completion. Tap "Next" to move on and you'll be able to write your cover letter — you can also include any relevant attachments that might support your application, or have been requested by the client. In my case, I included a brief introductory cover letter, outlining my relevant skills and experience alongside a sample voice demo for the client to review. Depending on the job, you may also be asked to answer a series of questions relating to the job at hand. Finally, tap "Submit" and you'll see a screen confirming your bid and the final amount you'll receive if selected, accounting for Upwork's service fee. After submitting to a job, the client may reach out to you via Upwork to discuss the project and your terms in further detail before making a hiring decision. If you're just starting out, Danny Margulies, who now earns over $100,000 a year as a freelancer, advises that it's best to start small and use the client's budget to inform your pricing. Successfully completing these smaller jobs will help to improve your profile's rating and build a network of repeat clients and referrals. You'll also develop new skills that will allow you to be considered for more demanding projects and increase your hourly rate as a result.
Step 4: Complete the WorkCongratulations! You booked the gig. Now to make the right impression. When selected for a job, Upwork facilitates communication by providing a platform for both parties to message each other. The client will usually make contact to disclose the finer details and any necessary direction to help you successfully complete the work. Positive feedback is critical to your ongoing success as a freelancer, and communication is one of the most important parts of that! Be responsive, professional and courteous at all times, and make sure to keep your client in the loop as you work on the project. If working on a voiceover project, for example, the client will send a final draft script to be recorded and offer direction for the style and tone of your read. For any visual commercial work, you may also be provided with the video or infographic which will use your final recording, allowing you to adjust the timing of your read accordingly.Discuss with the client ahead of time how you'll deliver the work. You can send files using Upwork's collaboration tools, or use a third-party solution if preferred. You can also agree on individual work milestones and how much you'll get paid for completing each one. When the project has been completed, and all work has been submitted and reviewed, it's time to get paid.
Step 5: Get PaidTo get paid for fixed-price contracts, select the "Accounts" menu on Upwork's desktop website, click "Settings," and choose "Get Paid." To bill clients for an hourly contract, you'll need to use the Upwork Desktop App to track hours and log time to your work diary, as this is the only way to qualify for UpWork's Hourly Protection. All payment and invoicing is handled by Upwork, and earnings can be withdrawn via direct deposit or by PayPal and Payoneer in the United States. You can choose to be paid on an hourly or fixed contract basis. Eligible freelancers are also provided with payment protection, ensuring that hours worked are tracked and any work delivered is paid for.Upwork charges a sliding fee based on lifetime billings with each client, meaning that the more business you've done with a specific client, the more you'll earn. UpWork's service fees are as follows:20% for the first $500 billed with the client 10% for lifetime billings with the client between $500.01 and $10,000 5% for lifetime billings with the client that exceed $10,000
Insight from Upwork ThemselvesWe had a chance to talk with Shoshana Deutschkron, VP of Communications and Brand at Upwork. Shoshana provided some great insight on the platform and its direction, so you might find this information valuable in your freelance endeavors.Gadget Hacks: How does Upwork differ from applications and services such Freelancer and Fiverr? Why is Upwork the right choice for someone looking to enter the gig economy?Shoshana Deutschkron: Upwork is by far the biggest platform where freelancers around the world can access the largest set of clients looking for talent, from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Staffing Industry Analysts recently ranked Upwork no. 1 for B2B Human Cloud platforms. Upwork is known for larger, more professional clients, compared to Fiverr which has historically been focused on $5 gigs.Upwork is also the only platform that provides hourly payment protection. Freelancers on Upwork can rest assured that an hour worked is an hour paid, as long as they track their work using our build in time tracker tool.Gadget Hacks: Can you comment on the recent concerns regarding Upwork's time-tracking feature?Shoshana Deutschkron: We would just reiterate a couple of key points, which is that the time tracker feature in the Upwork Work Diary is completely opt-in for freelancers. The technology primarily exists to help ensure our freelancers get paid. It is the underpinning of our Payment Protection.Gadget Hacks: Any tips for a new user who wants to start making money with Upwork?Shoshana Deutschkron: Decide what specific service you're going to offer, set up a strong profile that showcases your expertise and send targeted proposals to clients for jobs that match your skill set. Here is another tip from one of our most successful freelancers, Danny Margulies, who teaches a class on how to be successful on Upwork: "When starting out develop a mindset of strength. Don't just take any freelance job you can GET (a position of weakness), but focus on what you can GIVE (a position of strength)."Gadget Hacks: Can users fully utilize Upwork with your Android/iOS application?Shoshana Deutschkron: The Upwork mobile app for iOS or Android is designed so freelancers and clients can work via Upwork on the go and enjoy the same functionality they have on a desktop computer. The app allows freelancers and clients to do everything from submitting proposals and accepting job invitations for freelancers to posting jobs and reviewing proposals for clients.Gadget Hacks: What are the benefit of a tiered/premium plan over a standard free membership?Shoshana Deutschkron: Freelancer Plus gives freelancers the option to upgrade for extra features and perks as part of their Upwork account. Plus is designed to help you more effectively market your services and stand out from the crowd. The Freelancer Basic plan is the default, but upgrading to Plus allows for additional Connects, visibility into competitor bids, and perks like creating a personal profile link.Gadget Hacks: What is the most popular freelancing category?Shoshana Deutschkron: Freelancers on Upwork market more than 5,000 skills in 100 categories. Web, mobile and software development accounts for approximately half of the work don on the site. The top five categories of work on Upwork are:Web, mobile and software development Graphic design and content production Advertising, sales and digital marketing Translation, localization and writing Administrative and customer support Gadget Hacks: What is the earning potential for a freelancer on Upwork? What commissions does Upwork take?Shoshana Deutschkron: The earning potential for freelancers on Upwork is limited only by their time because freelancers set their own rates and can work as many hours as they want. Many who leave jobs to freelance end up increasing their earnings -- according to Freelancing in America, nearly two-thirds of freelancers who left a traditional job to freelance say they now earn more than before. Freelancers command rates as high as $200 per hour on Upwork.com.Upwork has a sliding fee structure that aligns Upwork's fees with the total lifetime billings for each freelancer client. Some freelancers will pay higher fees on small projects, while other freelancers will experience lower fees for larger relationships. As a freelancer, you will pay 20% for the first $500 you bill your client across all contracts; 10% for total billings with your client between $500.01 and $10,000; and 5% for total billings with your client that exceed $10,000.Gadget Hacks: How are sellers protected? How do you avoid non-payment?Shoshana Deutschkron: Upwork has a payment protection program that helps provides security to both freelancers and clients working together on both hourly and fixed-price projects. Upwork's Hourly Protection captures work activity to help clients ensure that work is completed for every hourly contract. In addition, Desktop App lets freelancers log hourly times and are assured payment for hours worked on the project. For fixed-price protection, clients making fixed-price offers deposit a milestone payment into escrow before work begins. Upon receiving and approving the work, payment is released to the freelancer.Gadget Hacks: What's the best way for users to secure work with Upwork?Shoshana Deutschkron: To reiterate the tips we provided for new users above, the best way for freelancers to find work is to decide what specific service you're going to offer, set up a strong profile that showcases your expertise and send targeted proposals to clients for jobs that match your skill set.More broadly speaking, the most effective way for a freelancer to land work via Upwork is to think of him/herself as a small business and focus on marketability. The skills needed today are constantly evolving so those who are proactive about skill-related education and development are more likely to possess the skills businesses are seeking today. According to Freelancing in America, 55 percent of freelancers have reskilled within the past six months (compared to 30 percent of traditional employees).Gadget Hacks: What payment options do you allow? How is payment processed after a job has been completed?Shoshana Deutschkron: Upwork allows freelancers and clients to choose the best payment method for them. Direct to local bank, ACH direct deposit, wire transfer, PayPal, Payoneer, and M-Pesa are all supported by Upwork.Don't Miss: 10 Micro-Gig Apps for Making Money with Your SmartphoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Gmail 101: How to Clear Search History on Android or iOS

Gmail 101: How to Clear Search History on Android or iOS
The Gmail app on both Android and iOS has a powerful search engine that helps you find any email with a few keywords. Even more impressive is Gmail's ability to remember previous search queries for future reference. However, this list of past searches can become extensively long and needs to be reset from time to time. The Gmail app has an option to clear the search history that will erase all past queries across all devices, though it's not very easy to find. But whether it's to improve the accuracy of search suggestions or to erase any trace of more "controversial" searches, this feature is worth finding. The process is slightly different on Android and iPhone, but we'll outline both methods below.

Clearing Search History on AndroidTo erase your search history on Android devices, open Gmail and select the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner of your screen. Choose "Settings" and select "General settings." Press the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of your display and chose "Clear search history." A pop-up will emerge asking you to verify your decision. Choose "Clear" and your search history will evaporate.

Clearing Search History on iOSThe steps on iOS devices are slightly different than Android. Open up Gmail and select the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, then choose "Settings" and select your email address. The last option in this new menu under the grouping Privacy will be "Clear search history" — select this option, then choose "Clear" on the popup. A message will appear informing you of your success.

Verifying History Has Been ClearedThis step is the same no matter which operating system you are using. Select the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right corner of your inbox. Try searching for an email with previously used keywords. If done correctly, none of your past search queries will be suggested. Instead, Gmail will only suggest built-in search suggestion (similar to conducting a Google search). Only built-in Google search suggestion should show after erasing Google believes in privacy and has shown this by including this feature in one of their biggest apps. Whether on iOS or Android, finding this feature is fairly easy and should be used often to improve the functionality of Gmail's search engine. Have you used the clear search history feature? Outlook 101: How to Customize Swipe Actions & Clear Your Inbox with Gestures

Swipe actions are an integral multitasking feature of any good email client, and Outlook is no exception. The application allows for two swipe actions at a time, but offers seven total options for those actions. We'll show you how to choose which actions go with which swipes to best tailor the app to your needs. To start, you'll just need Microsoft's Outlook app for either Android or iOS. To do that, just tap the hamburger icon in the top-left corner, then tap the settings gear in the bottom-left corner. From here, you'll find "Swipe Options" under the Mail sub-header. Tap this option to pull up the "Swipe Options" page, where you can edit what swipe action appear for either a right or left swipe.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Free Email Clients for iOS To edit your right swipe action, tap anywhere in the "Swipe Right" box. By default, the selection will be "Schedule," but when you tap here, you will find seven other options to choose from; "Delete," "Archive," "Mark Read," "Move," "Flag," "Read & Archive," or "None."Each option has a color that appears when performing the swipe action in action; "Delete" is red, "Archive" is green, "Mark Read" and "Move" are blue, "Flag" and "Schedule" are yellow, and "Read & Archive" is green. "None" appears grey in the Settings, but if selected, no option will appear at all when swiping in your inbox. When you're done there, repeat the same process for "Swipe Left." Once you choose an action for each swipe, head back to your inbox to try them out. Choose an email. Swipe slightly to see a preview of the action in grey. Continue the swipe to highlight the action with its designated color. That color lets you know the action is now active, and will activate once you release your finger from the display. In short, just perform a quick swipe left or right on any email to trigger your custom action! (1) Left swipe. (2) Right swipe. If you aren't happy with your new choices and would prefer to return to the way things were from the start, simply head back to the "Swipe Options" settings page and tap "Reset to Default" at the bottom of the display. How To: Sync Reading Lists & Cloud Docs on Your iPhone into a Single Audible Playlist

How To: Sync Reading Lists & Cloud Docs on Your iPhone into a Single Audible Playlist
Audiobooks are great because they require little-to-no effort on your behalf. When driving in traffic, why not listen to George R.R. Martin's lengthy A Feast for Crows instead of repetitive, commercial-laden radio? Maybe it harks back to prepubescent bedtime readings, but having things read to me is a very satisfying experience. If you find the stock VoiceOver feature to be a pain, there's a new way to have your books read to you, and it goes beyond that to read aloud saved web articles, content from read-it-later apps, and content in cloud storage. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Capti Narrator: The Easiest Way to Have Stuff Read to YouCapti was created to turn your digital content into one easily digestible playlist that you can listen to. Again, this playlist can consist of web content, Google Drive and Dropbox documents, as well saved items from a few different read-it-later apps. As Capti says on its app page, "Whether you are a student, a language learner, a commuter, a busy professional, a retiree, or a person with print disabilities, Capti will improve your productivity and make your reading more enjoyable."

Step 1: Install Capti Narrator & RegisterCapti Narrator was previously $19.99, but is now available for free, so make sure to grab it from the iOS App Store on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. After installing, you can sign up with your email and password, but this isn't a needed step at the moment and can be done later on. Registration is free and optional, but with an account, you can sync your Playlist across multiple devices and gain access to free trials of various voice engines. After you have signed up or skipped, you will be taken to the app's main page where there'll be a welcome audio recording for you to listen to, or you can just dive right in.

Step 2: Access the Side MenuClick on the menu icon in the top-left corner to reveal the side menu. Here, you'll see a list of multiple ways to bring in content, as well as apps that can sync with Capti, like Instapaper, Bookshare, and Pocket.

Step 3: Adding Web Articles (Browser Option)For starters, we are going to use the Browser function. Enter in your favorite site and select an item you want Capti to read for you, then press the + button at the bottom of the screen to add it to your playlist. Once an item is in your playlist, you can access and listen to it there at anytime. Just select the article in question and Capti will begin reading it for you. You can pause using the controls along the bottom, and also increase the reading speed by selecting the double-right arrows (>>). The back and forward buttons will move between items in the playlist, while the crosshair button will highlight the article that's being read.To remove an item from the playlist, tap on "Edit" in the top right. Select the items to be deleted and tap "Delete," or mark items as "Read" or "Unread." Items with a blue dot next to the title means that they have not been read yet.

Step 4: Add Content from Cloud ServicesAs I said before, you can add documents from services like Google Drive and Dropbox to your Capti playlist, and you'll need to sign in to each service to do so.After logging in, you will see a list of documents that can be added. Tap the + icon and the item will begin downloading. Once a download is finished, the blue + icon will fade and the added items will be available for listening in your playlist.
Step 5: Add Content from Read-It-Later AppsIf you utilize read-it-later services like Pocket, Instapaper, and Bookshare, all of your saved content can be accessed directly through Capti. Just log in with your account's credentials and your content will sync right up.

Step 6: Make Web Articles Read Better (Clipboard Option)For articles that may be too large or have page breaks that Capti does not recognize, you can copy the text over to the Clipboard. The Gadget Hacks article, "Get Android Lollipop's New Smart Lock Feature on KitKat," has a bunch of cool galleries and breaks that causes Capti to skip some sections.Simply use the copy feature (tap and hold) to select all of the sections you want to add to the Clipboard. Tap "Copy" and your text will automatically be imported into the Clipboard, after which you can use the side menu to access your Clipboard, then tap the + icon to add it to your playlist.

Step 7: Change the Voice & LanguageYou can change the default voice by going to the "Voices" option in the side menu. In the "Manage" tab, you can adjust the speech rate and set your preferred voice. Depending on your current language, you will see a few default voice options. Capti offers even more "better sounding" voices as in-app purchases of varying prices. If you registered, you will be able to try these voices for a limited time. Just tap "Try for Free" and download the item—Capti does need to remain open for the download to process. Once downloaded, you can change the voice immediately or switch it over in the "Manage" tab.

Step 8: Sync Content Across DevicesYou can also back up your content and playlist to Capti's servers by enabling sync in the "Settings" menu. Toggle it on (it will turn green) and now your content will sync across all devices linked to your Capti account.

Step 9: Get Capti on Your Computer (Mac & Windows)To get a really seamless experience across devices, Capti provides a Firefox add-on. If sync is enabled, you will be able to listen to your items via the Firefox browser, and you can quickly add items to your playlist. If you don't use Firefox, there's a bookmarklet available for other browsers, but it only supports adding content to your playlist, not listening. And that's all there is to it. Once you get the hang of it, the process for adding and listening to content across devices is pretty simple. Have you tried Capti Narrator out? Let us know what you think of it below!

How To: All the Swipes You Need to Know to Get Around Your New iPhone X

How To: All the Swipes You Need to Know to Get Around Your New iPhone X
The iPhone X is Apple at its most classic — they take away a key feature that seems odd at first, but usually, the change pans out in the end. So is the case for the long-lived Home button, whose last appearance may be on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. That begs the question — how do you use an iPhone without a Home button?Apple, of course, has come up with many ways, including turning the Sleep/Wake button into an industrious Side button that won't just lock or wake the screen anymore but do a lot of what the Home button was responsible for. However, the Side button can't do everything that the Home button once did. There are also a wealth of on-screen gestures that fill the void, and some of them aren't very obvious at first. We've compiled a list of the most fundamental iPhone X swipe gestures you'll need to know to multitask, get to the home screen, open up the Control Center, and more. Browse the list below to get on your way.Access the home screen: Swipe up from the gray bar at the bottom of the display. Exit the lock screen: Swipe up from the gray bar at the bottom of the display. You will need either your Face ID or passcode to continue, if enabled. Open the Control Center: Swipe down from the top-right corner of the display. View notifications on the lock screen: Swipe up on the display (works best around the middle). View notifications everywhere else: Swipe down from the top-left corner or middle of the display. Switch between recent apps: Swipe left to right along the bottom of the display for the previous app, or right to left for the next app. Open the app switcher: Slowly swipe up from the gray bar at the bottom of the display, then hold until all other open apps appear. Force-close running apps: Open up the app switcher, then swipe up on each app you want to close. You can also tap and hold on any app card, then tap the red minus on apps you want to close. Trigger Reachability: Swipe down on the gray bar at the bottom of the display (see link for instructions on activating the feature). Wake without pressing a button: Tap the display or raise the iPhone X to wake it. View widgets: Swipe left to right on the first page of the home screen, the lock screen, or when viewing notifications. Search with Spotlight: Swipe down from the middle of the display on your home screen. What do you think of the iPhone X's reliance on multitasking gestures? News: 10 Cool New Features in Android 8.1 for the OnePlus 5 & 5T

News: 10 Cool New Features in Android 8.1 for the OnePlus 5 & 5T
OnePlus has now officially upgraded both the 5 and 5T to Android 8.1 Oreo. As implied by the version number, this isn't a huge update from Android 8.0 Oreo. However, OnePlus has included a few of their own features as well.Android 8.1 Oreo acts more as a revision to Android Oreo than a new update. It corrects issues specific to Pixel devices and adds features that just missed the cut for 8.0. While there are some under-the-hood changes, the visual changes of Android 8.1 are minimal for OnePlus 5 and 5T in part because of Oxygen OS, which implemented other 8.1 features such as the automatic dark theme back with 8.0. Nonetheless, there are still some interesting OnePlus-specific changes.

1. Bluetooth Battery IndicatorFinally, OnePlus users can see the battery life of Bluetooth devices paired with the 5 and 5T. As long as the device support Hands-Free or GATT profiles (typically devices that use Bluetooth 4.0 LE and higher), you will now be able to see the battery life in both the Quick Settings and under the Bluetooth menu in Settings.

2. Picture-in-Picture with NetflixAlthough Google added picture-in-picture mode with Android 8.0 Oreo, Netflix only includes the features for devices running Android 8.1. To use it, open Netflix and start a video. Select the home button to continue the video in a small pop-up which you can move around your screen.
3. Cleaner Toast MessagesToast messages (the small pop-up messages that appear along the bottom of your screen) are now receiving an upgraded look. Instead of rounded gray backgrounds, these messages will now have semi-transparent white backgrounds with black text. It is a small change, but an appreciated one.

4. Answer Your Phone Without Touching the ScreenWhile this feature isn't a part of the official update from Google, OnePlus has included this with their latest beta release. With Open Beta 6 (or 4 for the 5T), you now have a new method of answering calls that doesn't require you to touch the screen. While in Settings, select the "Gestures" option and choose "Answer calls by gesture." Once enabled, when you receive a call, you can answer it by simply raising the phone to your ear.

5. New Clocks for Ambient DisplayThanks to their AMOLED displays, OnePlus 5 and 5T models include an Ambient Display feature which turns on a few pixels to display a small amount of information. With the latest beta release, you now have more choices when it comes to how the clock is displayed, including using an analog clock.

6. Better Settings Descriptions for Gestures (OnePlus 5T)This feature was first introduced with Open Beta 3, but OnePlus cleaned up the option in Settings with the new 8.1 release. The navigation gesture options are now properly described so you know what you need to do to enable the gestures. There are even GIFs that show each gesture!
7. Improved Fingerprint SecurityIf there are multiple unsuccessful attempts to unlock your phone via the fingerprint scanner, the fingerprint scanner will now be disabled and the user will be forced to input the PIN, pattern, or passcode instead. This might be annoying sometimes, but it definitely helps with deterring thieves.Additionally, if you're ever in a situation where someone is trying to force you to unlock your phone with your fingerprint (e.g., law enforcement), you could purposefully use the wrong finger to lock your phone and require a PIN. Additionally, if an authorized user keeps activating this feature, it can be an indication that their stored fingerprint needs to be recaptured.
8. Safe Browsing for Third-Party AppsThird-party apps can now access the Safe Browsing API. Safe Browsing is a Google service which protects against malicious and fraudulent websites and links. Google's Safe Browsing contains a frequently updated list of unsafe web pages and resources.Apps can now use this service to check the security of a link, warn users about potentially dangerous web resources, and stop them from accessing them. With this technology, even if an app becomes corrupt, any redirected web links should be caught before doing damage to your device.
9. Neural Networks APIAs more devices take advantage of machine learning, many are including a neural processing unit to perform machine learning computation more effectively. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (found in the OnePlus 5 and 5T) has it own unit, known as the Hexagon DSP.With Android 8.1 Oreo, apps running on the OnePlus 5 (and 5T) can improve their machine learning computation by taking advantage of hardware acceleration and inference on the Hexagon DSP. This will allow all machine learning computation to perform faster, improving the overall performance of the app.
10. No More Annoying NotificationsWith notification channels (introduced in Android 8.0 Oreo), multiple channels can ping your device at the same time from the same app, meaning you could receive multiple alerts per second. Android 8.1 Oreo changes this by limiting notification alert sounds to once per second. So while you'll still receive all your notifications, you won't receive multiple sounds, which are redundant (and annoying).Aside from these features, Android 8.1 brings small changes such as an updated security patch level (April 2018) and data migration support for OnePlus Switch. But more importantly, this update shows OnePlus is committed to keeping their devices on the latest version of Android. What do you think about Android 8.1 so far?
