How To: Use iOS 12's 'Digital Health' Features to Keep Your iPhone Usage in Check & Limit Interruptions
Apple knows their products can be addicting, and with iOS 12, they are doing something about it. With the help of Screen Time and few other new tools, it should now be a lot easier to get off your phone and enjoy life in the real world.Apple wants to preserve our digital wellbeing. With notifications and social media, many of us spend far too much time with our faces buried in our displays. Curbing a smartphone addiction is easier said than done, though. We need tools to keep ourselves in check, and that's where the new features in iOS 12 come into play.Apple didn't stop with just one new "Digital Health" tool. They also improved Do Not Disturb mode and notifications with features that'll help make it easier to put your phone back in your pocket. When combined, we can finally stop being slaves to our phones â€” instead, our iPhones can be tools that we simply use and put down.

Weekly Activity SummaryScreen Time is composed of a few tools that allow you to manage how long you use your phone each day. It starts with Weekly Activity Summary, a weekly report that details how you used your phone in the past week. You can find the Weekly Activity Summary by tapping your name in Settings â€“> Screen Time.In this report, you will see which apps you use the most and for how long. You'll also see how often you turn on your phone and which apps send you the most notifications. The reports break down not only how often you use your phone but what time during the day and in what location, giving you vital insight into your extensive phone usage.

App LimitsWhile the information from the Weekly Activity Summary can help you make your own choices, Apple provided some tools that will gently nudge you in the right direction when it comes to phone usage. One of the first choices is App Limits.App Limits allows you to assign a daily time limit for individual apps. As you approach the time limit, you will receive Screen Time notifications (known as Reminders) letting you know that you are almost at your limit.Once the time expires, you will be greeted with a message informing of the limit whenever you select the app. Once the day ends, you timer restart and you can return to using the app as usual. For those who need it, Apple also included tools to extend the time limit if needed.To set this feature up, head to the "Screen Time" menu in Settings, then select "App Limits" and tap "Add Limit." From there, you'll see a list of app categories. If you want to limit your gaming addiction, select "Games" here, or "Social Networking" for social media apps, and so on. You can limit the usage of all apps by selecting "All Apps & Categories," or you can limit time in uncategorized apps by selecting "Other." You can even select more than one category at a time, but when you're done, make sure to tap "Add."

Do Not Disturb Bedtime ModeDND is also gaining new modes to help preserve your digital wellbeing. A new "Bedtime Mode" enables a condensed and darkened lock screen during night hours to ensure you don't get distracted by a wall of notifications when you're checking the time.To turn this feature on, head to Settings â€“> Do Not Disturb, then enable the switch next to "Scheduled." From there, tap the From/To field to select the hours that Bedtime Mode will be active each night, then make sure the toggle next to "Bedtime Mode" is enabled. When you wake up in the morning, the regular multi-color background replaces the all-back lock screen found at night, along with weather and a new message. When you are ready to view the missed alerts, you can unlock your device and enter the notification center to view them.

Grouped NotificationsAfter years of user complaints, Apple is finally reintroducing grouped notifications. The feature was present for a brief time with iOS 9, but was inexplicably removed in iOS 10 and 11. Thankfully, it's back, and it should go a long way towards minimizing the distractions that come from dealing with notifications.Notifications from the same app (or same topic) will be stacked together instead of arranged individually. To view the individual notifications, simply tap the group and it'll expand. Once you've expanded the group of notifications, you can act on them individually by swiping left or right like usual. And by swiping on the grouped notification, you can dismiss all alerts contained within it. Automatic grouping is enabled by default, so your phone will determine which apps and topics to combine on its own. However, you can disable automatic grouping or force it to only group within an app (instead of by topic) if you head to Settings â€“> Notifications, then select an app and choose "Notification Grouping."

Instant TuningOne of the biggest causes of extended phone usage is notifications. As these alerts hit our iPhones throughout the day, we're repeatedly tempted to return to the iPhone's display and read. Unfortunately, many of these notifications don't require our immediate attention, and because of this, Apple added Instant Tuning.With Instant Tuning, Apple helps you manage notifications as they come in. By force-touching a notification, then tapping the ellipses button, you can choose to either turn off any sound or vibration for future alerts from that app, or stop notifications from the app altogether. If you turn off notifications, alerts from this app will be sent directly to the Notification Center, bypassing the lock screen. The app badge will also appear, but not its banner. Additionally, Siri will recommend "Instant Tuning" for apps you no longer are using.With the new tools in iOS 12, you can get in, deal with your tasks, and get out. Sometimes we need to share screenshots, but don't want to reveal the entire screen. This usually requires some editing that isn't typically easy to do on a smartphone. BlackBerry recognized this issue and created a tool called Redactor that makes it easy to hide your data before sharing.Redactor is free to use and preinstalled on the BlackBerry KEY2 and other BlackBerry devices powered by Android. However, for other Android devices, you can install it from the Play Store for 99 cents a month (after a 30-day free trial). Redactor makes it easy to share screenshots no matter what's on the screen by letting you cover some aspects of the image.

Step 1: Add Redactor to Your Quick Settings for Easy AccessWhile this step is technically not necessary, it makes things a lot easier. Swipe down twice on the status bar to fully reveal your Quick Settings, then select the pencil icon in the bottom-right to enter "Edit" mode. Find the "Redactor" tile, then long-press it and drag it up amongst your active Quick Settings tiles. When you're done, press the left-facing arrow in the top-left corner to save the change.

Step 2: Hide Sensitive DataRedactor works even before you take a screenshot, so no post-editing is needed. When you're ready to share a screenshot of a menu that contains sensitive info, start by opening your Quick Settings panel and selecting "Redactor." A toast message will appear informing you that "Redactor mode is on," and a bar with a list of options will appear along the bottom.The first button controls the shape of the black mark used to hide portions of your screen. When the small rectangle is chosen, swiping on the screen will create a rectangle over that section. The small circle will form a black circle. However, for the most precision, use the dotted square icon. This icon creates a more narrow rectangle that matches the size of a typical text bubble used in messaging apps. If you make any mistakes, use the undo button (the second icon on the bottom bar) to undo the last action. Once you have hidden your data, you are ready to take a screenshot.

Step 3: Take and Share Your ScreenshotYou can take a screenshot using the standard commands of volume down and the power button, or the new option in Android P's power menu. Redactor also includes the choice to both take and share the screenshot using the share button (the third icon on the bottom bar).Either way, view your screenshot to verify that all your data is hidden from view. If you use Apple's email services and the "From:" field in your iPhone's Mail app is cluttered with @Mac.com, @Me.com, and @iCloud.com variations of the same address â€” along with third-party accounts â€” there's an easy way to declutter things and hide the addresses you don't use anymore.In January 2000, Apple released iTools to Mac OS 9 users. The service included an @Mac.com email address, along with other free, internet-based services. Over the following years, the service was rebranded as .Mac in 2002, MobileMe in 2008, and iCloud in 2011. At each step, data and email accounts were migrated to the succeeding service.Depending on when you signed up for the service, you may have an @iCloud.com, @Me.com, or @Mac.com email address, along with each iteration that followed. For example, if you were an early adopter of the original Mac.com service, you have access to youremail@mac.com, youremail@me.com, and youremail@icloud.com, with all of them delivering email to the same account.Don't Miss: 5 Mail Features You Might Not Know About for iPhone Further confusing things is the fact that Apple has always allowed individuals to create custom email aliases. These are email addresses that deliver email to your primary address but can be changed or discarded whenever you don't need them anymore. They make a great option when you'd rather not give out your primary address, want to sign up for a mailing list, or when you're worried about receiving spam. Regardless, they still show up in your "From:" field, further cluttering it. Before and after decluttering the "From:" options. While it may be nice to have a choice of which email address you want to use, it can be frustrating to see the "From:" field of your Apple Mail app cluttered with each iteration of your email address, especially if you're in the habit of only using one of them. Fortunately, there's a simple way to hide the aliases you're not using.

Step 1: Open Your iCloud Email SettingsTo hide those annoying aliases in iOS 11 or iOS 12, the first step is to open the Settings app on your iOS device and select your name at the top of the list. After that, select the "iCloud" settings, then scroll to the very bottom of the next page and select "Mail" to open the iCloud email settings.Alternatively, you can get to the same place by going to "Passwords & Accounts" in Settings. Tap "iCloud" one there, then "Mail" from the bottom of the iCloud email settings page. For iOS 10 users and below, you can get to the same place by opening up "Mail" in Settings, tapping "Accounts," then "iCloud," and selecting "Mail" from the bottom of the list. Alternatively, you could open "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" in Settings, then tap "iCloud," followed by "Mail" at the bottom.

Step 2: Hide Aliases You Don't Use MuchYou'll now see a list of email addresses associated with your iCloud account. The list will likely include any previous iterations of the email address that are still being used. What this list does not show are any third-party emails you have connected to Mail, like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook.Simply deselect the Apple aliases you don't want showing up in your "From:" field when you compose emails. You won't be able to deselect the email address you use for your Apple ID â€” that one will be grayed out â€” but you should be able to deselect all of the others. Tap "Done" to save your settings. You will still receive emails at the hidden addresses. However, you won't be able to send emails from those addresses as long as they're hidden, and any replies to emails sent to those addresses will be sent from the email address you left visible in the above settings.This won't impact any other email addresses you use in Mail, such as Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or a work address.If you have an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you should only have to do this on one device for it to take effect on all of them, as your Mail settings are saved to iCloud. Some users have reported that iOS software updates reset these toggles, so you may have to update these again later. Personally, we haven't experienced this issue and settings persist after every update.

Step 3: Manage Unwanted Email Addresses (Optional)Don't think you'll ever use those aliases ever again? You can actually delete them from your iCloud account for good or just disable them temporarily. However, you can't do this from your Mail app â€” you need to do it from a browser.Open up icloud.com in a web browser, sign in with your Apple ID and password, select the "Mail" option, then the cog in the bottom left. From the menu that appears, select "Preferences." Next, select the "Accounts" tab, then choose the alias you want to manage from the left column. On the right, you can check "Disable alias" to temporarily remove it or select "Delete" to get rid of it altogether.Disabling an alias is temporary, while deleting will remove it entirely and cause mail sent to it to be returned to the sender.Also note that if you have more than three aliases, and you delete one, you will not be able to create another alias. Apple only allows three aliases at any time now but did allow five total before. If you have five, you're grandfathered in and can keep them, but only if you don't delete them. For those that only have three or less, you can delete an alias and make a new one in its place. The iPhone XR is the best bang for your buck option among the 2018 iPhones. Splitting the XR and XR Max right in the middle with screen size, it makes small compromises to to keep the price low. However, with the release of the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung has their own formidable middle option as well, the Galaxy S9+.Without the Galaxy Note 9, this Galaxy S9+ would have competed against the iPhone XS Max, which would have been a more even match. But with the price drop of the S9+ and the similar screen size, for some, these two phones will be pitted against each other. And while the iPhone XR is a great iPhone for the money, it will have a hard time matching the similarly priced Galaxy S9+, which has more features for less.

DisplayIn the battle between these two midsize phones, the display is where Team Samsung will scream the loudest. Except for screen size, the iPhone XR will have a hard time competing against its Samsung counterpart here.iPhone XR has 6.1 Liquid Retina HD IPS LCD. Owning an Android device is almost like having a PC in your pocket. Android's ability to easily navigate the file system on your phone is one of many features that separate it from the competition. Just plug your phone into a computer, drag the file over, and you're all set.But USB cables aren't the only way to transfer files from your phone. Cloud storage and file sharing services like Pushbullet can serve as a go-between amongst all of your devices. Unfortunately, though, file-size limits can hinder your ability to use these services with bigger files. Pushbullet, for instance, limits you to 25-megabyte files, and Box limits your uploads to 250 MBs.Developer Cylon U87 has created an app that will put an end to struggles with file size limits. With his app, you can simply split the file into pieces that will fit your service, then easily re-join them on the other end. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable Unknown SourcesSince Cylon's app, Files Splitter & Joiner is not available on the Play Store, you'll need to ready your phone for sideloading. Just head to your phone's Settings, then tap Security. From here, tick the box next to Unknown Sources and press OK on the subsequent popup.

Step 2: Install Files Splitter & JoinerFrom your phone's browser, just tap this link to download the installer file. When the download is finished, tap the corresponding notification to launch the installer. From here, press Install, then when it's finished, tap Open.

Step 3: Configure OptionsWhen you first open the app, swipe in from the left edge of your screen to see the side navigation bar. From here, tap the Settings icon near the bottom to configure some options. Most of these settings have very specific use-cases, but one to be aware of is Create self-joining batch file. This will create an additional file that can be sent alongside the various split pieces, that, when launched on a Windows PC, will automatically join the pieces. If you're planning on sending the large file to a Windows computer, be sure to enable this option.

Step 4: Split a FileFrom the app's main screen, just tap the Folder icon to the right of the Select a File field. This will bring up a file browser interface which you can use to find the file you'd like to split. To queue the file up for splitting, simply long-press it. The app puts the split pieces into the same folder that the original file came from, but you can change that destination using the icon to the right of the Select output folder field.When it comes to splitting the file, you have 2 choices: Number of chunks or Custom size. Use Custom size if you'd like the file to be automatically split into pieces that fit your cloud service's upload limits. To split the file into a specific number of pieces, use Number of chunks. When you've made your choices, a new button will appear in the upper right-hand corner. Just tap this to begin splitting your file.

Step 5: Join FilesSay for instance you've split a file, then sent it over whatever medium, and you'd like to join the file on another Android device.Open Files Splitter & Joiner on that device, then use the side navigation menu to select Join. From here, tap the Folder icon at the top-right to browse to any of the file's pieces. Long-press one of those, then tap the Join button in the top right-hand corner. While the adoption of Apple's newest mobile operating system, iOS 8, was smoother than its predecessor, there were still a lot of bugs and features that needed ironed out. There were lost cellular signals, missing Camera Rolls, a confusing iCloud Drive, and no functioning Apple Pay yet, among other things. Now it's just over a month later from its first release to the public and things are finally looking pretty good.The newest iOS 8 update, iOS 8.1, was released on Monday, October 20th, and there's a lot of good news for iPad and iPhone users. Aside from various bug fixes, most everything that was promised in the iOS 8.1 beta has been pushed out to the public, so let's go through everything real quick.

Third-Party App Permissions ViewAs we've mentioned before, there's a small update in the Settings menu for apps, where individual permissions are displayed as soon as you tap on an app, instead of buried in a "Privacy" folder. Small change, but good nonetheless.
The Only Downside: Emulators Don't Work!If you were using one of the awesome game emulators available on iOS 8, that fun is now over. Any exploit that utilized changing the date on your device is no longer working on iOS 8.1. It was only a matter of time until this exploit was patched and, unfortunately, that time is now. Looks like we'll be waiting for a jailbreak on iOS 8+ to see these guys again.All-in-all, aside from broken emulators, 8.1 was a much needed update from Apple.
